The Twiiterverse brings us news that Canberra Airport is flooding inside thanks to a leaking roof in the new terminal. Not only that but they’ve run out of booze for all the passengers stuck waiting.

Anyone remember the last major construction project in Canberra that didn’t leak? Has years of drought somehow led to collective amnesia among architects, engineers and builders of what happens when water falls from the sky onto a structure?

ED – the SES has this to say:

12:37am Friday 3 December 2010 – Severe storm results in flooding at ESA HQ A severe storm event at Canberra Airport last night has resulted in flooding at the Emergency Services Agency headquarters at Fairbairn.

Man has been building structures since the dawn of time and still can’t make one that is waterproof.

Sounds about right, remember the Canberra Centre after that hail storm with the new section. Oh and the old section! DJs included

That was some bloody storm, though! Our house copped it too, I thought we had it bad until I saw Civic the next morning.

Seems about par for the course for anything built in this town in the last decade (or two).
The new undercover carpark at Belco Mall had so much precipitation it was as though there was no cover at all.

To be fair, the section shown in the photo is the temporary section linking the new terminal to the virgin blue section of the old terminal.

It was hardly designed to be a perm structure. Whilst water proofing was probably desirable, very few people could have predicted the amount of rain we have received over the last few months.

I hear that the new multi-storey car park at Canberra Hospital leaked into the electrical gear, delaying the opening of the bottom few floors.

As long as the new leather lounges aren’t damaged 😀
