A three-tiered burger feast with all the trimmings has arrived in Canberra. Dainty sandwiches and pastries have been switched out for sliders, chicken popcorn, pickles and more!

With a minimum of two people and an advance booking, carb and meat lovers can enjoy a feast for $40 per person. Tier one of the high tea includes generous serves of all-star favourites of beer battered chips, popcorn chicken and deep fried halloumi bites. Tier two has pickled guindilla peppers wrapped in prosciutto, house-made slaw, American style pickles plus the juicy additions of two sliders. The Miss Piggy slider has a sweet combination of bbq pulled pork, slaw, Swiss cheese, homemade applesauce & sliced pickles while the Uncle Sam slider has a succulent hand-rolled beef patty, bacon, fried onion, cheddar cheese, bbq sauce, pickles & mustard mayo. For something sweet, the top tier features a changing array of bite-sized desserts. To wash it all down, a schooner of local draught beer or a glass of bubbly is included in the price with the option of upgrading to a bottomless beverage for an additional $20 per person.

Where is all this available? On the sunny eastern end of Kingston’s Foreshore at Beef & Barley. With Norgrove Park on one side and the lake on the other, it is also a meal with a view.

Owners Lauren and James Hawketts have built a reputation for relaxed dining and top-notch burger and craft beer combinations since opening. Lauren said, “We opened Beef & Barley in 2016. We’ve tried to create a fun and relaxed atmosphere where people can laugh, connect and enjoy each other’s company. To us, sharing a meal is about connecting with friends; life gets busy, and it’s fun to eat out and share stories with people over good food and a long drink. Burgers and craft beers are easy because everyone likes burgers! We also have board games, a weekly trivia night, and the occasional live music to keep you entertained.”

“Our local community here is great – we have some amazing neighbouring restaurants, we’re close to cultural icons and there are beautiful walking tracks around the lake. We tend to get lots of workgroups and professionals, tourists, runners/cyclists and young families – it’s nice to have all kinds of customers come in to enjoy our burgers! Our team at Beef & Barley goes smitten whenever a dog comes in; suddenly everyone wants an excuse to go see the dog and talk about how fluffy it is – it’s safe to say we’re all dog people here, your whole family is welcome!”

As for the inspiration for the Burger High Tea, Lauren shared, “We recently lived in the UK, and both worked at a Teahouse known for its Traditional High Tea. We found that blokes often complained that the food was too small, or too sweet, or they just weren’t interested in smoked salmon and cucumber sandwiches. When we went back to visit the UK last year, our British friends joked that we should do a Burger High Tea – and the idea was born. The Burger High Tea will be available permanently! However limited stocks are available each day so best to book in advance.”

Visit Beef & Barley on the Kingston Foreshore on the corner of Eyre St. They are open Tuesday – Sunday 11:30 am – late.
