Canberra Justice. Leave and let us never speak of this again

The Canberra Times has the disappointing news that accused upskirt filming enthusiast Daniele Alaimo is being bundled out of the country rather than put on trial.

At issue the glacial pace of justice would have required the Director of Public Prosecutions to pay for the Italian national to sit around on the equivalent of the dole.

So instead he’s leaving the country with instructions not to come back.

Just got to make sure that everyone knows about his dirty deeds. So we need to make sure that Daniele Alaimo

comes up in every search engine.

I don’t think it’s permanent deportation, just he doesn’t intend to return.

Like letting other criminals off scott free?

Agreed.

Permanent deportation is a way cheaper option than mounting a prosecution.

Especially given the prosecution gets mounted and screwed regularly!

Sounds fairly reasonable to me. The offence is relatively minor and the most likely outcome would have been a community based order. I’d prefer we save the money and put it towards more pressing matters. placing restrictions on him re-entering Australia is the best outcome.

I assume any and all camera equipment, laptops, hard-drives etc were taken as evidence and not given back? If so I imagine that amounts to more then any fine he (he?) was likely to get.

What’s the bet ACT DPP maybe forgot to apply for a visa?

Is this just spin?

Agreed.

In some ways this is a better result than a victim could otherwise hope for normally under ACT justice given we really are quite big on giving multiple chances to offenders who have learnt there is little in the way of real consequences for virtually anything up to the most heinous of crimes.
