The Melbourne Ice have taken to posting video of the fights at their matches.

Above the Canberra Knights’ Alistair Band shows them how it’s done coming off significantly better against the Melbournian Lee Lambert.

Staged as like WWF.

As for a new rink, about 8 years ago the leaseholder of the rink wanted to redevelop the site, but needed a site variation to build a 10 story tower block upon it. That would have provided the money to redevelop the rink I think. What happenend to it?

Ian Warden in the CTimes on the weekend opined about the great game of ice hockey using the Knights vs BlueTongues game as a bit of a metaphor for a bunch of things I didn’t quite grasp. Otherwise it was a surprising column in the Forum liftout section of Saturday’s paper.

But yes, it is a wonderful game. It is just a shame, as Warden observed, the ice rink at Phillip in which it is played — arguably the best in the nation’s capital — is a death trap, an OH&S nightmare, an absolute disgrace and something — if the ACT Government was serious about supporting the development of Canberra as a winter destination for snow bunnies stopping off enroute to Jindabyne etc — around which you’d expect closer inspection by Health, ACTPLA, Office of Workplace Safety, Fair Work Ombudsman (the way they rip opff the kids there is appalling) and others.

Where are Joy Burch, Andrew Barr, Kate Gallagher and Simon Corbell when we need them for a new rink with private funding complementing ACT Government funding, land and land tax incentives? If Mick Gentleman or John Hargreaves had their way, I’m sure there’d be support.

C’mon ACT Labor; if you really want to demonstrate how democratic and supportive of all sports you are, speak with people who know what’s needed in Gunghalin or down in the Tuggeranong Valley. For no more than $2M, you could have a state of the art ice sports facility which would be the envy of the country (with possibly the exception of Melbourne which has just opened its over-priced but excellent Docklands Icehouse twin-rink facility).

The existing Phillip Rink is a disgrace, and while Riot Act’s JohnBoy might be keen for a little corporate hospitality (gimme a break! – have you seen the filthy condition of the “canteen”, the toilets, the shower block with the backing up faeces ‘swimming’ over the changeroom floor regularly?), the present ownership and management of the rink don’t deserve this attention.

“Should” should say “showed”. They kinda sound the same, not sure how I typed it wrong.

For the record that was a decent scrap p1.

Actually, I was just picking on them. I usually get to a couple of games a year, and that was better then I’ve seen in Canberra. And you are right about this being the only sort of coverage hockey tends to get in Australian media, I would rather they should a second or two of footage of a disagreement like that and a minute of play.

I retired a few years back so don’t think I can pull those kind of strings anymore. I’ll see if I can get you some passes for the last home game of the season on Saturday the 14th of August against the Melbourne Ice.

Looks like I can after all. I sent you an email JB.

Hey JB how about as a trade off for the hits you will generate from posting this video you add another video of a great goal being scored in Australian hockey?

We’re not all thugs.

You’re welcome to send in match reports, photos and vids any time you like

(or invite us along for some corporate hospitality if you’re so inclined)

While I am all for some actually hockey action rather then a rather long and not very exciting video of two guys dancing, I am not sure about what you are suggesting. I suspect that the riotact will boost views of that video substantially more then that video will boost views of the riotact.

What I am getting at is the fact that the Australian media continually shows footage of fights when they choose to highlight hockey as opposed to some of the incredible skills on display that should be the focus.

For the record that was a decent scrap p1.

How’s it go? “I went to a fight, and an Ice Hockey match broke out” 😉

oh how I miss playing that sport – for a sport supposedly known for fights, very few broke out when I played. Sure there was some rough checking, but nothing worse than you’d see on a footy field.
