Canberra - Like Adelaide, only without the cheap real-estate, or the beach...

The Canberra Times has got a story on a survey of Sydney-siders attitudes to Canberra as a precursor to an advertising campaign . I like the way they used “less frantic pace of life” as a euphemism for “boring” and span it as a positive.

Apparently we’re about to spend up to 150,000 telling people in Sydney’s South and South-West that they should come move to more expensive real-estate in a smaller city. Much like Adelaide’s slightly pathetic campaign, only without the low cost of housing.

Canberra’s real estate isn’t more expensive than that in South and SW Sydney – a fair bit cheaper in most cases, in fact…

“Those kind of people are the kind of people that have an uncle called ‘Jethro’ and like to stick people in plastic bins at the back of banks.”

So we’re after Taswegians now too?

The money would be better spent doing anything else than advertising for people to come here. Frankly, I am horrified that Canberra would think itself attractive to those of the community that would be persuaded to move to Canberra over a 30 second advertisment on TV.

Those kind of people are the kind of people that have an uncle called ‘Jethro’ and like to stick people in plastic bins at the back of banks.

Apparently Sydney houses are over valued, where as Canberra houses are under valued. http://www.domain.com.au/Public/Article.aspx?id=1134236048437&index=PropertyNews

Better value than Adelaide, and much better than Sydney.

Now Canberra also doesn’t have the low end capactiy that Sydney has, but I doubt we’re going to get people to move here to live in slums.
