Old news now, but I think that it is worth noting that Canberra Man, Matt Davey was unfortunately one of the nine people killed in the recent Sea King Helicopter crash in Indonesia.

Matt was well known to me through his work as an Intensive Care Doctor. I also knew him through our common love of paragliding.

I knew Paul Kimlin – at uni, a long time ago now, but I have often thought of him since. He was one of those wonderfully friendly, likeable, genuine guys that you wish there were more of. I really feel for his family, and especially his girlfriend. I can’t imagine being in her position.

VG,

The hill at Kaleen is a training hill, but still fun.

Canberra’s main site is Spring Hill, which is between Hall and Murrumbateman (sic?) You can actually see it from the Barton Highway.

There are also sites at pig hill, near Uriarra and the best summer site is Lake George.

If you want to learn, call the guy on that link. He’s a tool in my opinion, but the only instructor in town, and not a bad guy to get on with. Just don’t give him all your money up front!

See you in the sky. Actually, there’s another copper who flys. Name is Jim Astley. He’s a detective in the sexual assault team, about to move to drugs I hear. Nice guy, chat with him.

As a self-serving aside (my sincerest apologies), Dave has whetted my appetite for paragliding, thanks for the link.

Whingeing in a sky near you very soon.

You are the mob that has a dig off that hill near Kaleen aren’t you ?

There is an online condolence book at http://www.navy.gov.au.

I used to fly in the Sea King squadron. Don’t believe what the press is trying to beat up about their age, they are superbly maintained. My thoughts are definitely with the families of those that passed. A tragedy. RIP

David

My sympathies to you and anyone else affected. It was a horrible thing to happen.
