The AFP have the disturbing news that there’s a Canberran amongst the 65 Australians arrested for child abuse images in a global sting out of Canada:

Sixty-five Australians have been arrested and 399 charges laid as part of a global investigation into a child exploitation website operating out of Canada.

A total of 339 suspects have been arrested worldwide, in one of the largest investigations of its kind by law enforcement agencies across the globe.

The investigation, which was led by the Toronto Police Service (TPS), has uncovered a large international network of people using a Canadian-based website to access child exploitation materials.

Details of the three-year international investigation were announced last night by the Canadian authorities.

The details of Australian-based users were referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for further investigation after the TPS was able to determine the identities of the website’s international customers.

Under what is known as Operation Thunderer, the AFP and state and territory police subsequently conducted 103 search warrants across the country, arresting 65 people for 399 offences relating to child exploitation.

As a result of investigations 386 children have been removed from harm worldwide, including six in Australia.

My heart goes out to those who have to review the evidence. Must be devastating.

They could advertise the job, then arrest everyone who applies…

No idea thank goodness. I do know he didn’t think he had done anything wrong.

It bothers me sometimes, the time lag between these things being discovered and people being arrested. It seems like the arrests happen but the announcement comes much later. I hope. Because otherwise children are being left at risk, or even being abused, while the investigations go on. So if we were to to trawl through court reports, we should find that someone was charged for this in Canberra in the last couple of years – surprising the media didn’t report it then, but maybe there was a suppression order?.

Nothing is more important than the safety of children. It should always be expedited.
