Now it has been a long lamentable fact that I, Ssanta am the voice of the sane, moderate individual in the ACT and RA communtiy, but everyone now and then along comes something that I feel the need to comment on.

Today it is this pearler from ABC, who reporting that with the advent of new suburbs Canberra may need more volunteers to stem the tide that is a rampaging bushfire.

Mr Hargreaves is prattling on that with the new suburbs we will naturally need more RFS volunteers to naturally combat the bushfires that will threaten these meccas of the devine existence that is living in the ACT.

I agree, and I also congratulate the ACT Government on this much needed and fine idea. However I would like to point out, that it is indeed far from me to complain about all issues green and of a conservationist bent, if we do continue to place suburbs in these areas, not only will we reducing the risk of bushfires and thus, reducing the need of risk management of the urban fringe, surely spending money on firefighters trained to fight fires in an urban setting would be a far more wise way to aquit these public funds?

Just a thought… bearing in mind that an event such as 2003 comes once every 30-40 years. Mind you, I would like to see Thumper and Maelinar cruising around in bright Orange jumpsuits, with Zimmer frames in tow spitting at every young person they see…

we musn’t panic, we musn’t panic (says the CFU member facing the fire front and shaking the hose in a comical fashion)

those community fire units do have a touch of the dads army about them.

It all comes down to planning, and as I have mentioned, there doesn’t seem to be any indication of appropriate services (SES, RFS, Police, Schools, Churches blah de bloody blah) in the plans for the new developments.

Any dork who has ever played simcity knows that’s a recipe for disaster.

sounds like a breathtakingly inefficient approach. as well as being strategically inept.

better to have resources that can be concentrated where they are needed rather than pissing it away all along the perimeter.

The most interesting thing is that the ACT Government decided not to declare the western urban edge of Canberra “bushfire prone” to ensure the replacement homes got built to the appropriate Australian Standard. Even the experts have disagreed with this policy in public.
