The ABC explains that Australia has “won” the right to host the soccer Asian Cup in 2015 after no other country wanted a piece of it.

The list of potential venues is:

Sydney’s Olympic stadium, Sydney Football Stadium and Parramatta Stadium, Melbourne’s Docklands and AAMI Park, Brisbane’s Lang Park, Gold Coast’s Skilled Park and Canberra Stadium.

Which will no doubt thrill both of Canberra’s Asian Cup fans.

But before they get their hopes up, the bad news. That list is going to get culled to “four or five selected venues”.

Smart money says the last two are going to get the chop.

UPDATE: Mr Stanhope is celebrating and thinks we’re going to get six group games and a quarter final.

This tournament is becoming bigger every time it’s held. The only reason we don’t know much about it is because we’ve only been part of the Asian Football Confederation for a handful of years.

It would be brilliant to get even one game.

what month is it on? will it be too cold?

ahhh, Canberra could so do with a stadium with a roof…. just ask the Brumbies and Raiders fans

JB – you’d be surprised who might be interested in Australia hosting the Asian Cup in 2015.

If Australia ever wants to bid for a world cup again ….. (hell might freeze over before we try that again) at least we will have a few Asian Cups under our belts. Australia only joined in 2007 and have a good record against the likes of Iran, Korea Republic, Japan and Saudi Arabia – who are reportably the top countries in the Asia region.

In terms of gaining credibility as a football (soccer) sporting country, we have to start somewhere! Bring it on. It would be good for Canberra to host a few games, it might help our chances with a A league team?

another interesting take, as uusual from eamonn… agree that canberra will make the cut – three in sydney? nah…

Its a big event but not that big. If anything Canberra is assured of getting some team like Bahrain playing Uzbekistan or something similar.
The smaller stadiums are good for farming the less popular games out to and they are all on the east coast with good transport links.

Funnily enough, the best we can hope for is staging a better Asian cup than Qatar do this month 🙂
