Canberra on Wikipedia?

Although I do not hold an opinion that Wikipedia is the be-all and end-all, tonight I did a search on Canberra on their site.

After reading the Canberra story, I was wondering has anything happend here in the last 6 years or so? The last entry from Wikki on Canberra’s history is the bushfires in 2003.

Surely something else of note has occurred here since then. The GDE, DFO, Kevin07???

Oh, just use RiotACT as a source or reference in the text and you should get a link to remain without any bother.

They probably can, and would. As a rule I don’t think they allow blogs similar online spaces to have their own page on Wikipedia.

that could be fun.
It would also be hilarious watching all the Nutters changing the entries. he he he

The Canberra Times is listed in the Media section, but RiotAct is not??? A simple oversight but perhaps this should be corrected….

Best of luck arguing this one with the wiki nerds

Skid, warts and all, it’s still a trivia quiz writer’s best friend.

“You may fire when ready!”

Whoops, I missed the word “academic” in your sentence. You can shoulder your arms. No argument there whatsoever.

Anybody citing wikipedia in anything academic should be shot.
Its a useful starting point for getting to better sources, sure.
But its still a quantum encyclopedia, possibly accurate or not, depending on how and when you look at it, and the general mob agreement on a topic.

I like the bibliographies and the links to primary sources. Wikipedia is a starting point not the end point for getting information.

Wikipedia to me is an interesting social experiment. I’d never rely on it for anything somewhat serious.

Exactly the way I feel. I love the ability to read about random subjects, but I trust the info the same way I trust info I get from a random drunk guy in a bar.

I gave up editing wikipedia after making some edits and then watching the trolls, wiki – laywers, and generally a bunch of assholes with nothing better to do that misrepresent facts revert, edit and argue.

It’s a good idea, except people with an actual knowledge of the subject are often over shaddowed by the d*ckhead minority. Unfortunately it means that pages are either very watered down, or it allows the fringe views (often the idiot or miss-informed views) as much presence as the main stream views.

I also have a big problem with their NPOV rules. To me, the accepted point of view held by society is not necessarily a NPOV. However try posting up something which goes against societies grain and see how far you get.

There was some ugliness when it was alleged that PM&C staff had . . . ‘adjusted’ the wikipedia article on a certain former Prime Minister and a certain former Treasurer.

PM&C are not allowed to use Wikipeadia?

Unless you work in Prime Minister and Cabinet, you all should be adding this content to the Wikipedia page.

What about the launch of Canberra Goss?

Surely the winner of the beauty contest at the Melbourne Cup Day thingy at the race track could use a bit of wiki style talking up?

LOL! Thats right! That was a massive topic last year. Someone being overcharged $5 for a pizza at APK. That was definately a big moment in Canberra’s history.

someone was overcharged for a pizza; surely that’s worth a guernsey?

That’s the problem with Wikipedia, it has such a narrow view of reality. Personally I think the muppets line is absolutely true.

Go ahead – TRY and add to it and watch your edits disappear under thousands of wik-lawyering control freaks, even if it is sourced, NPOV etc etc. Waste of time.

LOL a truer sentence has never been written on wikipedia!

I don’t know that anything significant has happened in Canberra that really warrants a wikipedia entry.

I’d say the election would be covered under the ACT Government entry, and there might even be a page for the election itself (couldn’t be bothered looking).

Anyway, as blueberry said – if you want some fresh stuff on there, add it yourself. Just make sure it is wikified 😀

Yes it’s no wonder decent menswear doesn’t get sold in Canberra. HB opened which should’ve been a kickstart for companies like Armani Exchange, Massimo Dutti, Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren to setup their own shops.

Pfft, DFO opened.

Hugo Boss opened.

Wikipedia is a user generated content site. So if nothing has changed it is beacuse nobody has felt like changing it.

How about you write up something and add it to the Canberra Wiki.
