Winter – that time of year when all Canberrans band together in mutual hatred for sub-zero temperatures. It’s also a great opportunity to inject some layering and cute accessories into your outfits. But before you spend an entire month’s rent on a new winter coat and piles of cashmere sweaters, why not check out your local op shop to see what winter goodies they have in store?

Today, we’ve put together a fun winter look, 100% thirfted from Canberra op shops.

Stripe jumper – $7 Salvos Jamison
Black mini skirt – $7 Salvos Jamison
White platform heels – $7 Vinnies Belconnen

The key piece for winter is obviously a warm coat to keep out the insane Canberra cold. A quality winter coat will easily set you back several hundred bucks, so it’s worth checking out if you can source on second hand before investing. This one is a wool blend, which will keep you super-toasty. The khaki colour is a little bit different while still remaining neutral, and the hood will come in handy to keep your hair dry if it rains!

One of the best things about winter is throwing on a big ol’ cozy jumper, and this one is extra fun because it comes with cute naval stripes. Jumpers are also a great item to thrift because it doesn’t matter if they aren’t the right fit, you can always go for a slouchy boyfriend look! Look for natural fibres like cotton, wool, silk or cashmere to ensure a quality piece that will look spiffy for years to come. You can often find good quality sweaters at op shops, as opposed to cheaper synthetic ones that easily pill and lose their shape.

The black denim skirt is a staple for all seasons, and can easily be worn with stockings for extra warmth. The mini length also helps to balance out the bulk in the top half of the outfit.

To cap the outfit off we’ve chosen some killer white platform heels, because who doesn’t want to be an intimidating snow goddess? It’s easy to fall into the comfort of wearing boots all winter long, but try changing it up and throwing on some heels. Who knows, you may even transform into Elsa from Frozen…

Our total winter look clocks in at $56, not bad for an entire outfit including a toasty wool coat!

Have you been op shopping lately? Find any cute winter woollies?

You look cold. I need leg coverings in winter.

I would only buy op shop items that can be seriously hot washed – second hand items are a key risk for introducing bed bugs to your home, and they are alive and well (unfortunately) in our well-travelled town ……
