Canberra pets – Lizards, anyone?

Peter Holland 26 September 2008 7

Recently, whilst looking for some info for my wife regarding a discussion about bird eating spiders (they do exist!), I found this website: http://www.exoticpets.com.au/

The owner has broken it up into 2 sites, live animal shows and the shop. I couldn’t help it, I was curious, and wanted to see what live animals you can own here in the ACT without a permit.

I must admit, I would be shot if i brought a lizard home, but it is very interesting to see the diversity of Canberra businesses.

i looked into this for a kid who wanted a pet, they are a friendly bunch with a very well set up shop and mini zoo there in kambah. in ACT you can get blue tongue lizards and one other kind – i forgot now, but both grow very big, very fast. after two years you can apply for a license to keep other reptiles, like the tiny geckos i had in mind.

i ended up getting two bantam chooks, he was / is stoked with them

We have a Bearded Dragon bought from Pete at Exotic Pets/Repriles Inc – they make a great pet.

I love this place – it’s got a great set up, and even if you aren’t interested in buying, it’s fun to look at. Pete really know what he is talking about too. Planning to buy my partner a turtle from them for his birthday… just as long as he doesn’t go back to them for a snake after 2 years!

Bird eating spiders….. Yes they exist and I have seen two while living in far north Queensland. Would not like one as a pet though. Also heard a story about a bobcat digging up someones front yard and they hit a bird eating spider’s nest. Apparently she was very protective of her babies and was trying to bite the bobcat tyres! Go Girl!

I’m sure it’d be OK if you got a lizard that criticises soft drinks with a weird accent.

From what I understand, the permits are still pretty easy to acquire. A small fee and and a check with NPWS gets you a permit?

The guy who runs the shop knows his stuff and we were going to them for a few years for things for our pythons… until we wound up selling them to him due to our own circumstances.
