ACT plumbing firm Water Tight Canberra has scooped the 2019 Telstra Business Award for Australia’s top Small and Succeeding business.

Announced on Thursday night, the awards, now in their 27th year, celebrate and showcase Australia’s best in business.

Of the 21,000 companies that entered this year, only four were selected as national winners.

The Telstra Awards said Water Tight won for its ongoing commitment to social and environmentally conscious practices re-engineering the plumbing industry.

The judges were impressed by Water Tight Canberra’s fastidious approach to business, finding a niche in a crowded market through their focus on detail, customer service and supporting their local community.

Water Tight owner Tom Martin said the award was a remarkable achievement for ”this high-flying, down-to-earth company”.

“We are proud and honoured to have been given this recognition,” he said.

“This achievement means so much for us. It proves that our values of service, honesty and integrity are being recognised. We believe it will demonstrate to our customers that they are dealing with a professional business. In fact, we believe that it will help to rebuild trust across the entire plumbing and trades industry.”

The honour tops off nine years of hard work, building the business into a successful company with 11 full-time employees and more than 4000 clients.

It caps a number of successes in recent times. In 2018, Water Tight was selected for the Icon Water community and excellence award, and Mr Martin was also appointed as a judge in the ACT World Plumbing Skills Competition.

This year apprentice Aaron Keen won both the Stage 1 Apprentice of the year and the Overall Earnie Dearing Apprentice of the year at the 2019 Master Plumbers Awards Night.

“We believe our achievements flow directly from our commitment to our community. When you do good, you’ll do well,” Mr Martin said.

The Telstra award paves the way for an exciting future for the company, which continues to grow and invest in new technology as it moves into new commercial premises.

“We have a new operations manager starting in January, which will help us to improve our service even further. We’ll also keep investing in the digital technology that sets us apart from our competitors. We believe innovation doesn’t cost you money – it saves you money,” Mr Martin said.

Mr Martin said the award showed the importance of how you treat employees and customers.
