Canberra Prisoner practices immaculate conception . . .

The Canberra Times reports
that serial thief and drug abuser Skye Joyce is seeking an early release from the Alexander Maconochie Centre on the basis she is due to give birth next month, the prison does not provide facilities for mothers and babies, and she believes she will be separated from her baby if it is born behind bars.

Ms Joyce’s criminal career to date does not indicate a significant concern over her separation from the two children she already has.

More interesting by far is speculation as to how Skye managed to achieve pregnancy on this occasion. Nothing on the Alexander Maconochie Centre web-site indicates they provide facilities for conjugal visits, but Ms Joyce is due to have her baby in March but does not complete her 12 month sentence until April.

“No touching!”

Family visits are conjugal visits. Unlikely they’re the major source of drugs as they’re not common.

The immaculate conception has probably come about by the 12 month sentence being a head sentence, comprised of various bits of suspended, periodic detention etc. and/or she spent a bit of time on remand in custody, was then bailed, then remanded in custody again – got pregnant on bail, but eventual 12 month sentence was backdated to take into account the earlier time on remand too. It can be very complicated when the person has spent several periods on remand and bail for the same charge( s).

If they do it is pretty unclear from the website. There are four types of visits available at the AMC – contact, non-contact, family, and professional.

Contact visits are conducted in designated areas and permit limited physical contact between a detainee and a visitor.

Non-contact visits exclude all physical contact between a detainee and a visitor, and are conducted in cubicles specified for this purpose.

Family visits take place in the family visits room, the purpose of which is to foster positive family relationships and ease the transition from prison to the community. Family visits are a privilege and approval will depend on the detainee’s behaviour.

Professional Visits from lawyers, official visitors and the like.

So unless “fostering positive family relationships” is custodial-speak for conjugal visit, I can’t see where it is permitted.

Don’t believe everything you hear

lol

Oh?
I’d heard they did allow / facilitate conjugal visits,
and it was the main avenue of drugs entering the place.
