Survey 2 for 2008 of the Nielsen radio ratings for the Canberra market have been released at http://www.nielsenmedia.com.au/en/pdf/mri/22/Canberra22008.pdf . This is just an overall market view (ie no shift or age/demographic breakdown etc) but interesting nonetheless.

In summary, 104.7 and ABC 666 both achieved the highest overall rating of 17.4, narrowly edging out MIX 106 at 17.3. Survey one results from March (around the time of Skyfire) were 22.9, 18.9 and 12.6 respectively. Although it seems like a big loss of listeners for 104.7 and a jump for MIX, the latest figures are much closer to survey two from 2007 (18.6, 18.7 and 17.4).

What I find most interesting is that 2CA copped an absloute hiding in this survey. They only managed a 4.1, losing more than a third of their (already low) 6.7 from survey one and 6.6 from survey two 2007. Shame, as I’ve been listening to it a lot recently and like what I hear (sound quality notwithstanding). Do they bunker down, hoping that it’s a rogue survey, or change their format again?

Oh, and fellow Rioters may be interested that not even alleged viral stunts on these esteemed pages (http://the-riotact.com/?p=7849) and (http://the-riotact.com/?p=8726) or a nicely filled vintage 2CA t-shirt (http://the-riotact.com/?p=7831) managed to help the station this time around…

i know one thing, the big drop in ratings for the ABC 666 drive show makes sense. That Louise Maher girl that does it is painful. her innane giggle drives me up the wall. ABC should let the girl go and put ut out of misery

Why not? I’d rather here ‘Down Down’ than anything by Hinder or Nickelback, which is all I ever seem to hear on Commercial Radio. The only time I ever listen to 106 or 104 is when I travel on buses, and I always step off at my destination significantly angrier than when I got on.

I used to quite often foam at the mouth when buses were my main vehicular transport, usually because I’d always seem to cop old Golden Tonsils John Laws. I grind my teeth at the best of times, but I was down to the gums after just five minutes of his drivel.

And then one day when I was about to try to move to the back, he put this song on. It was to the tune of ‘Walking in a Winter Wonderland’ (Johnny Mathis?) and it was rebadged ‘Walking Round in Women’s Underwear’. Laugh? I nearly coughed out a lung.

So that sort of made up for some of the teeth-grinding. Back the dolts who jump on the talkback for those shows just make you lose faith in your fellow men and wimmin.

One thing nobody has mentioned is that 2CC lost almost 2 percent and is now down to just 6 percent of the market. No less than four ABC stations (666, JJJ, Radio National and Classic FM) each have a bigger audience. How on Earth do they stay on the air?

ooh, based on the ABS definition of the working age population, RiotACT achieves a 20.78% market penetration

What you didn’t see in the media releases (and very poor Canberra Times analysis in today’s paper) is that this survey was a huge setback for FM104.7.They lost a massive 19.5% in their core 18-24 year demographic and 8.4% in 25-39’s. Most of the 18-24’s appear to have headed to 2JJJ whilst the 25’s -39’s went over to Mix 106 along with defectors from the two AM stations.Mix recently reworked the format and now play more 80’s and 90’s tracks. It appears to have paid dividends. What FM104.7 does will be interesting because status quo is certainly not an option based on this survey.

My prediction for the next survey is ABC 666’s breakfast to continue is slow but steady slide with Mix the beneficiary.

Just tuning in to RAW FM for the first time. ‘Tis good, definitely on the preset list now, and the signal’s a good deal better than I thought it would be.

Artsound recasts a good ambient music program on Tuesday nights (10.00 to 11.30pm: Ultima Thule), out of 2MBS in Sydney. These guys have been pumping the show out for almost 19 years. They post their set list and provide links to lots of downloadable stuff. http://www.ultimathule.info/ (Stop me if I mentioned this on another thread…)

Commercial radio is like wiping your arse with sandpaper. Only more painful.

I really enjoy those two blokes on 104 in the morning. They’re heaps better than the 2 syndicated blokes in the evening drive-time. I might go to 106 to check if any good song are on, but as soon as that Lisa person starts up, off I go. Triple J is always good. I do really enjoy 106’s Cold 30, you hear songs that haven’t been aired in years.

as for 2CA, they are doomed. You only have to listen to it (if you can) to be horrfied, over and over again.

When TripleJ was first making waves in the Canberra surveys, I asked David Marshall (then FM104 manager, now manager of Canberra Tourism) if it presented a problem to his network. He said “They don’t have ads, so it doesn’t matter”. That struck me as odd, given that his revenue is presumably affected by the number of his listeners, and if they all migrated to another station, he’d sink. Whether the station they went to had ads or not.
Funny industry the radio industry.

Yeah I don’t mind a bit of RAWFM – though they need to get a bigger signal amplifier as the station’s transmission can be weak.

Has anyone else listened to the banter of OneWay FM? It is a local radio (or at least one with segments of local content) that streams ‘far out’ (for Australian ears anyway) Bible Belt USA radio programs.

Raw FM 87.6 – although it’s not strictly Canberra radio. Dance music 24/7 for the young and the young at heart.

JJJ has commendable ratings in Canberra. Pity that’s not replicated around the country…

It’s the only station worth listening to 🙂

104 always goes up around Skyfire time, they usually run their biggest promotions in survey one.

What I can’t get over is anyone actually listening to 106 breakfast, I feel dumber everytime I hear those guys speak.
