Survey 2 for the year is out, and the general trend is for losses by the AM stations and gains by the FM stations. Interestingly, FM 104.7 managed to take over the top spot from Mix 106.3, for those who are wondering, the survey was undertaken from October 9 to November 5.

The results for Survey Two are as follows:

  1. FM 104.7 21.0% Up from 18.4&
  2. MIX 106.3 20.7% Down from 20.9%
  3. 666ABC 17.6% Down from 18.0%
  4. JJJ 8.5% Up from 7.1%
  5. ABC CLASSIC FM 7.0% Up from 6.9%
  6. 2CC 6.8% Down from 7.7%
  7. RADIO NATIONAL 6.7% Down from 8.1%
  8. 2CA 4.4% Down from 5.3%
  9. NEWS RADIO 2.5% Up down from 2.6%

Nielsen Media have their slightly more graphical version of the report here.

2CA actually have a fairly loyal audience, it’s not much of an audience, but I believe the figures are better for the older demographics. Unfortunately those figures aren’t released to the public in a regional area (Thankyou Nielsen)

As someone who was asked to keep a log book of my lstening habit for the survey I found it very easy – no one with even average intelligence would have a problem with it.

Funnily enough I “have a life” and I’m not a radio obsessive”

It takes 5 minutes of an evening to recall that you listended to station XYZ over breakfast, station 123 while in the car, station XYZ for an hour at lunch in the canteen and station ABC on the way home in the car. Not difficult.

Errr…I typed it all…if down makes you feel better than down it is…one of the admins want to fix it for me please?

NEWS RADIO 2.5% Up from 2.6%

Up?

exactly, the ratings have got to be hopelessly skewed because they exclude non-radio obsessives.

fascinating the ABC makes up over 42% on aggregate.

CAn you imagine having to write down every 15 mins if you’re listening to the radio and what you’re listening to? No thanks…some of us have a life!

I think the way Nielsen treat regionals and community stations is a joke. All stations should be included in the rundown, and regional markets should really get the same detailed public reports that the metropolitan areas get. Nielsen collect the same stats in all areas so they should produce consistent reports.

Whoo – hoo – Other (not mentioned) gets 4.8%

(You don’t get listed in the survey unless you pay big bucks to – or are the ABC – meaning community stations aren’t counted. But 4.8% for community radio is respectable)

I believe that Nielsen use a log book system where the day is segmented into fifteen minute blocks (which is exactly what they did when they were running the TV ratings). Households are chosen in an effort to equally represent the community and all the people in the house (over the age of 10) are given a logbook to keep track of their listening.

The current TV ratings on the other hand use an elctronic gizmo that measures the frequency the television is recieving to determine which channel a person is watching…I think a similar but modified system is either already in use or is under development for digital TV.

Nielsen explain their methodology at http://www.nielsenmedia.com.au/product.asp?ProductID=20&Go.x=15&Go.y=12&Go=Issues

I’ve always wondered, how do they measure ratings? Technologically speaking.
