Exciting news in from the world of Hip Hop with Canberra’s top acts getting together.

Five of Canberra’s premier hip hop acts have come together to form Capslock Collective; a project that they hope will help to transform the capital’s hip hop scene.

The collective consists of local acts Coda Conduct, Context, Nix, Semantix and Stateovmind, who all have a diverse sound yet a shared passion for strengthening both the local community and Canberra’s standing on a national scale.

The project is the brainchild of local rappers Context (Johan Gibson) and Stateovmind (Tim Stevens), who believe that by working together, local acts can make a big impact.

“All the artists involved [in the collective] are established in their own right, they all have a different style, but I guess what we wanted to do was come together to show that the ACT can hold its own against bigger cities.” says Gibson.

One of the first steps that Capslock have taken is to build a website, which not only profiles and provides links to its members’ music, but also offers a platform for promoting local hip hop gigs and events across the ACT.

With several of Capslock’s members being the organisers of The Next Movement, Canberra’s local hip hop night, the collective have experienced first-hand the difference that a connected and active community can make for musicians.

“I didn’t really know any other artists before we started holding The Next Movement last year” says Erica Mallett, one half of Coda Conduct, “but now there’s a real sense of solidarity. I think Capslock is really just a natural extension of that.”
