The Canberra Roller Derby League is keeping us up to date with the progress of the Australian side at the “Blood and Thunder Roller Derby World Cup”:

Local CRDL stars Bambi von Smash’er, King Cam, Short Stop and Amykazeee are in the 20 strong squad.

Australia rolls right over Germany 135 – 53

Australia got off to a smashing start as the only team to play twice on the first day of the tournament winning both their games by huge margins. In the first game Australia met Germany on the track and played conservatively steadily stacking on the points.

The Germans worked hard to turn the tables early in the second half of the bout but the Australians dominated the game with solid teamwork and steady jamming. The Aussie skaters worked on controlling the pack and running down the clock to protect their lead. Canberra favourites Short Stop and Bambi von Smash’er wowed the fans with quick, agile jamming and strategic play. While the Bam and Shortie both had huge scoring jams, King Cam was on the track working her blocking magic as part of the pack.

The Aussies flatten Finland 179 – 29

In their second game of the day Team Australia played a careful game to start ensuring an early lead and strategically calling off jams to prevent Finland scoring. The Aussies appeared to have become more comfortable on the track and played harder and harder as the bout went on. Finland put up a valiant fight, but could not break the Aussies’ solid teamwork.

Once more Bambi von Smash’er showed her jamming brilliance scoring points and zipping through the pack. During one spectacular jam in the second half of the game Bam managed to score 10 points while her team prevented the pack from moving off the official start line. In this bout Bam was joined by one of Canberra’s favourite blockers; Amykazeee working the pack with her spirited defensive moves.

The Cup continues in Toronto.

UPDATE: The CRDL site now has the tale of the tape for the rest of the tournament.

Actually, it’s all done and dusted. Team Australia did a great job and came fourth.
