Less than a year after launching the wildly successful Snapper & Co, Canberra Southern Cross Club’s uncanny nose for Canberra-centric venues has led it to open The Tipi Embassy.
The enormous and elegant structure, custom-designed by South Coast Tipis, has claimed prime real estate on the grounds of the Southern Cross Yacht Club precinct in Yarralumla against the picturesque backdrop of Lake Burley Griffin.
There it will treat up to 70 guests at a time to relaxed dining experiences catered by the Snapper & Co team and provide a stunning new option to hire for private events.
The concept will soon be tested with the first two pop-up events: Lakeside Grazing on 9 September and Bonfire Night on 16 September.
CSCC CEO Ian Mackay is confident the group has landed on a winner – and with good reason.
“Within hours of releasing the details for the first event, we’d booked out half the capacity,” he says.
“The team challenge themselves to always come up with out-of-the-box ideas. We’ve never been afraid of failure, but we’re feeling very good about this one.”
Lakeside Grazing will be a relaxed lunchtime event in beautiful surroundings, inviting friends and family to enjoy a three-course grazing menu, local region beers and wine, and live music.
The Bonfire Night is billed as an afternoon/evening of “warmth and barbecue”. As the sun sets to live music, guests will partake in shared BBQ plates, desserts, whisky tastings and Canberra region beers and wines.
“It’s early spring, so there might still be a bit of a sting in the air, but the bonfire will keep us nice and warm, and it’s such a beautiful setting to be out at sunset by the lake,” Ian says.
“We’re hoping both of these events give the Canberra community a good idea of what to expect from this unique venue. We’re very excited to make the introduction.”
The structure itself has been tailor-designed to capitalise on the lakeside location and adapt to Canberra’s capricious weather, with heavy canvas sides that can be lifted and lowered as needed. This means the tipi lends itself to elegant, fun and vibey events in every season.
Menus will be designed by the Snapper & Co team to suit each event.
“The Tipi Embassy will absolutely accommodate seated events, but we suspect it’s best suited to light grazing type menus that allow people to roam as they eat, mingle and take in the marvellous atmosphere created by the Tipi and the lake,” Ian says.
Inspiration for the venue came to the CSCC team during a food and beverage study tour that led them to a similar concept in Queensland.
“We saw one in action in Byron Bay and we were captivated by the uniqueness of the space and relaxed vibes. We knew immediately it would be perfect for the Yacht Club’s lakeside location,” Ian says.
“It has taken nearly a year of planning to get to the launch stage, but that has given us ample time to get our ducks in a row. We’re confident that come launch time, people are going to fall in love the same way we did.”
