Canberra Stadium upgrade?

By Thumper - 1 July 2008 15

According to the Canberra Times, Canberra Stadium would be upgraded to accommodate 40,000 fans if Australia won the right to host the 2018 or 2022 Soccer World Cup. That was the view of ACT Sports Minister Andrew Barr at yesterday’s launch of the 18th annual Kanga Cup, the biggest junior soccer tournament in the southern hemisphere.

Canberra Stadium’s existing capacity is 25,000 but Barr and Capital Football officials have had discussions with Football Federation Australia about FIFA’s requirement that World Cup venues have a minimum capacity of 40,000.

What’s Your opinion?

Canberra Stadium upgrade?

comments re: half empty for raiders and horses are valid but as to what happens afterwards – der, a bigger stadium means we can hold other events -such as wallabies games, etc etc…..means there’s more revenue for the rest of the year…

Venues are unable to host any sought of major event with Temporary seating as you discribe. I think if the ACT aspires to host any major event into the future, then a stadium capable of holding 40K is a good idea.

However, who will pay???? Watch the bidding war heat up for federal/state funding should the World Cup Bid be successful. The World Cup may be a boon economically but will the increased infrastructure costs outweight that perceived benefit?

Three guesses who will pay…actually I take that back, you only get one.

To answer the second part of your question is of course the increased infrastructure costs will outweigh the perceived benefit. It will cost literally millions to put 20,000 extra seats in the stadium for a handful of events that might actually use them all.

they need to return the playing surface to an oval shape, it will become more useful for all sports and become more viable than having the raiders play there for 6,000 people.

Astrojax – we can only dream, but I can’t see it. Let’s hope I’m wrong.

lol roadrage i remember that movie

maybe with a 40k stadium we can get an AFL team, A League team, Baseball team, Cricket team, Rugby League team, Rugby Union team

yay

not

I think Mr Barr’s seat would like to see the stadium upgraded?

astrojax 2:40 pm 01 Jul 08

that’s ‘body’, not ‘bosy’ but a bosy behind us would be fun!

roadrage’s comments don’t even deserve reply – enough said in other threads on the topic…

but fredj, i don’t agree that we’ve no chance in 2018, despite sepp blatter’s comments. he is only one vote and while he thinks it might be then time for the cup to ‘head back to europe’, he’s out of step
with likely future rotations. traditionally it has been europe – americas – europe – americas… but from now, with fifa wanting to add to the contingent of hosts, the flow of venues will have been europe [germany 06] – new host [s.a 10] – americas [brasil 14] – new host [so why not australia?] – then europe [so england may get another crack…] – etc…

it is short sighted and defeatist to think we can’t win the bid – and the asian federation bosy is behind our bid, and asia is a growing elephant in fifa and not to be trifled with.

as for the stadium being emptier for raiders games etc, it will be filed for the many a-league games we’ll have by then!

I reckon that’s a damn site better than grown men sniffing each others bum and dry rooting the ground.

But, whatever turns you on.

Awesome, so when no-one shows up to Raiders/Brumbies games the place’ll look twice as empty. I understand that it would fill up for any World Cup games, but seriously, then what? Maybe look into a temprary seating option or something like that.

Agreed.

Both Raiders and Brumbies crowds have been in a state of decline over the last few years. Making the stadium bigger will equate to a morgue-like atmosphere even for a 20k crowd, which is much bigger than the average attendance for either code last season.

Only sheilas, wogs & poofters care about soccer anyway. For some reason grown men rolling on the ground clutching their faces doesn’t hold a lot of appeal for me.

If Australia wins a WC bid I reckon the upgrade will go ahead. But as Fred says, that’s a long way off yet.

FredJ 12:05 pm 01 Jul 08

With South Africa in 2010 and Brazil in 2014 there is no chance of the World Cup being held in the Southern Hemisphere again in 2018 – dream on. 2022 might happen, maybe, who knows and it’s so far in the future, who cares?

It’ll never happen.
