Applying for your dream job is now as simple as pressing a ‘like’ button, thanks to a Canberra startup taking the hassle out of finding a new career.

LikeaJob (www.likeajob.com.au) is the brainchild of Chris Hansen, a hospitality veteran who also owns Ox Eatery at Kingston’s East Hotel. He describes the website, which launched four weeks ago, as a cross between Seek, eHarmony and Carsales.com.au.

“We’ve taken the job seeking component from Seek, the matchmaking concept from eHarmony and the ability to filter results depending on what features you’re after from Carsales.com.au,” he says.

“We match people to jobs based on a complex algorithm that takes into account their location, experience, qualifications and skillset.”

LikeaJob’s search engine shortlists jobs based on the information provided in a job seeker’s profile, such as years of experience and preferred working hours.

When a job seeker finds a job that interests them, they click ‘Like to Apply’ and the employer is notified instantly. In turn, if the employer also ‘likes’ the job seeker, they are able to unlock the applicant’s contact details and get in touch.

Unlike other websites, LikeaJob does not charge employers to post ads. Employers pay a small fee – between five and eleven dollars – to unlock contact details of applicants.

Since its launch last month, LikeaJob has already signed up 400 job seekers and counts Hotel Realm, The Hyatt Hotel and Lonsdale Street Roasters as some of its most active employers.

Hansen says that the initial focus is on attracting hospitality, retail and trade job seekers and employers, though he expects this to expand over the coming months.

He is working closely with the Canberra Institute of Technology to help soon-to-be-graduates find jobs faster.

“LikeaJob is a good website for apprentices, because if they wish to move jobs, then they only have two weeks to find another job, and lots of apprentices leave the industry because of that,” he says.

“Now, they can create a profile on LikeaJob, enter their skills and experience and be matched with relevant employers in their area.”

He says the idea for LikeaJob came out of frustration at not being able to find good staff in a hurry.

“I was using online job boards to find hospitality staff, and it wasn’t easy. It cost hundreds of dollars every time I wanted to post an ad, it was time consuming and I couldn’t find the right people at the right time,” he explains.

“I thought, if I have this problem, then there must be other people like me struggling too – not just in hospitality but across all industries.”
