Canberra the champions of Asia

The SMH has the very exciting news that the Canberra Cavalry have won the Asia Series:

“We started at the bottom now we’re here.” And here means champions of Asia.

That saying has been the mantra of the Canberra Cavalry, who stunned the baseball world to beat the Uni-President Lions 14-4 in the Asia Series final in Taiwan on Wednesday night.

It refers to them being the Australian Baseball League wooden spooners just 12 months ago.

Since then they’ve won Canberra’s first ever Claxton Shield as ABL champions and now they’ve conquered the multi-million dollar teams of Asia.

Play it again Freddy:

Mrs. Morland was a very good woman, and wished to see her children everything they ought to be; but her time was so much occupied in lying-in and teaching the little ones, that her elder daughters were inevitably left to shift for themselves; and it was not very wonderful that Catherine, who had by nature nothing heroic about her, should prefer cricket, base ball, riding on horseback, and running about the country at the age of fourteen, to books — or at least books of information — for, provided that nothing like useful knowledge could be gained from them, provided they were all story and no reflection, she had never any objection to books at all.

Some say that that is the first ever reference to baseball, or ‘base ball’. Northanger Abbey, 1817. Note that Catherine also played cricket.

Note also the elegance of the prose!

My kingdom for a full stop.

I thought that’s what soccer was invented for. Or to be honest, Twenty20.

Jesus H. Christ, is there anything you won’t whinge about?

Well done to the Cavalry. This news was also featured on theMajor League Baseball website.

My father played baseball for South Australia in the early 1960’s and also played softball at West Beach against the likes of Ian & Greg Chappell (which I think was the secret behind their great batting ability).Maybe some of our current cricketers need to take up softball/baseball in the off season.

Guys, well done. A magic win.

And JB, thanks for Freddy – another win.

Baseball, like cricket, has it’s origins in England. Whining about every little f@$ing thing on the Internet however, that’s so American.

Congratulations Cavalry. We do like a good underdog story.

Jane Austen mentions baseball.

I suppose that’s why cricket has been trying ever so hard to become more and more like baseball over the last twenty years or so?

And I don’t think “intellectual” is ever going to be a selling point for either game.

Bowl/pitch, hit, catch. Only mensa members need apply.

How come our uni-president doesnt have his own baseball team? Seems just the thing for Canberra Uni.

This is quite an impressive achievement – while the Taiwan team plays in a fairly so-so league, the Japenese league is possibly the 2nd or 3rd best professional league in the world and the Korean league isnt too bad either.

No Australian team has ever won a game before in the Asia Series, let alone winning the whole thing.

Sounds like an amazing feat for an Aussie team to have achieved even a bit of what they’ve just done. Good on em.

Well done them!

That is when I say, oh yes yet again,
Can you stop the cavalry?
