Canberra Times going hyper-local

NineMSN has some inside word on what’s coming for the slimmed down Canberra Times:

While there was no clear breakdown of job losses, the source said management gave an “indication” the paper’s press gallery office in Parliament House would probably be closed, with staff merged into the wider Fairfax bureau.

Journalists were also told The Canberra Times’ focus in future would be on more local news.

One would have thought that a press gallery team focussing on the effects to the public service of the machinations of Government would have some local news purpose. But in the past they’ve generally just run with the pack.

But online focussed and hyperlocal eh? Guess we were right all along.

I suspect a focus on local news with repoters who chase down stories rather than swallowing the latest media handout as a story would prove very succesful. Things are very cosy at the top end of town with a compliant local media.

All bulldust aside why does the Canberra times need their own staff up at the big house? Do you see staff from every other state up there writing for their own paper?

The CT having their own staff is a hangover from the days when it was not part of Fairfax. Now it is why shouldn’t they get their Parl House stories from a pool?

The CT own staff should be doing local stories and getting their national and international news from other Fairfax resources.

Well it’s been a few years since I was up there. But most metro dailies did have their own office. A lot of people producing very little of value IMHO.

A focus on “more local news” doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Win local news is already struggling to fill their quota by scraping the bottom of an empty barrel. I have given up even trying to sit through half an hour of thier tediously boring content.

See this is what I was saying a couple of days ago. Why in press scrums are there reporters and photographers from both Fairfax and The Canberra Times? This duplication needs to stop and those people redeployed to chasing and researching real stories rather than door stops.

Basically journalists like working in a pack and editors hate seeing stories in other outlets that they don’t have.

More local news? Does this mean an end to the constant cut and pastes from The Guardian, The New York Times, The Independent and any other news source they can plunder?

And now, it’s to compete with the Qbn Age or Chronical?

With a name like yours, do you work for the CT?

How times have changed, Michelle Grattan’s days at the CT almost put it the same league as the Age or SMH of those days, and for a local newspaper, that was some achievement.

Well said.
