Canberra Times going hyper-local

I suspect a focus on local news with repoters who chase down stories rather than swallowing the latest media handout as a story would prove very succesful. Things are very cosy at the top end of town with a compliant local media.

All bulldust aside why does the Canberra times need their own staff up at the big house? Do you see staff from every other state up there writing for their own paper?

The CT having their own staff is a hangover from the days when it was not part of Fairfax. Now it is why shouldn’t they get their Parl House stories from a pool?

The CT own staff should be doing local stories and getting their national and international news from other Fairfax resources.

A focus on “more local news” doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Win local news is already struggling to fill their quota by scraping the bottom of an empty barrel. I have given up even trying to sit through half an hour of thier tediously boring content.

See this is what I was saying a couple of days ago. Why in press scrums are there reporters and photographers from both Fairfax and The Canberra Times? This duplication needs to stop and those people redeployed to chasing and researching real stories rather than door stops.

More local news? Does this mean an end to the constant cut and pastes from The Guardian, The New York Times, The Independent and any other news source they can plunder?
