Canberra Times journos taking the day off

The SMH has an AAP story about Canberra Times staff going out on a wildcat strike over plans to move Newcastle Herald and Illawarra Mercury sub-editors to New Zealand. (That those two mast-heads could be employing 66 subbies has boggled minds here in The Eagle’s Nest).

“Journalists, producers, designers and photographers at The Canberra Times are angered and dismayed at proposals by Fairfax Media to outsource to New Zealand the editorial production of the Newcastle Herald and the Illawarra Mercury,” a spokesperson said.

“As a result, we will stop work until first shift on Friday, 1 June.”

The first shift begins at 6am tomorrow.

That will make tomorrow’s edition a bit of a collector’s item.

what are they all doing?

Reading the websites of real news agencies and deciding which articles to re-publish in their rag

To answer my own question, according to Win News tonight “over 50 staff voted” to strike.

50 staff – what are they all doing?

Buy a newspaper, sack most of the best journos, take a tabloid-style editorial policy, then sit back and relax as your subscriptions go down the dunny. Then pretend that you’re surprised.

Management will just fill the edition with cut and pasted items from RiotACT…

Will? You mean continue to, this from just yesterday: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/headless-kangaroo-not-victim-of-cull-20120530-1zjjj.html – though to their credit, they give a nice plug to RiotACT in the piece so at least they’re not trying to hide it.

I don’t think the CT will be any different, strike or no strike. How many staff do they even have anymore locally? I recall all the subbing was meant to be outsourced some time ago. Which may explain the poor quality of writing.

The whole website is now just a clone of SMH with a couple of sections where the CMS can insert local stories so I can’t imagine much local effort going into that anymore.

And I recall someone on here once being mocked for jokingly comparing Woroni to the Canberra Times, well, mock no more. They’ve got Woroni editors writing their articles now, like this drivel about how old people smell: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/national/proof-of-older-persons-smell-20120530-1zjjp.html
(And to be frank, a lot of journalism and english graduates would wondering just what the hell seeing this.)

Sooner CT goes the way of the Dodo, the better as I see it. They have the local advertising market locked up to an extent through long term relationships. If they collapse, surely that would open it up for new players.

I don’t think anybody will notice the difference. Management will just fill the edition with cut and pasted items from RiotACT, The Drum, The Guardian and The New York Times like they do every other day.

How can they go on strike when they don’t do anything in the first place?
