In the midst of the dust and excitement as Canberra hosts the Australian Mountain Bike Championships at Stromlo Forest Park this weekend, the UCI (International Cycling Union) announced Canberra as the host for the 2009 World Mountain Bike Championships. This is a huge boost to mountain biking in Canberra, bringing the image of mountain biking in Australia to even higher levels, which will provide new opportunities for the sport. The ACT Government late last year promised one million dollars to assist with the staging of the event if it was secured, so now they will have to cough up the cash. Although they should see a good return on their money, as over 50,000 people are expected to visit Canberra for the event.
