Congratulations are in order for latest local sporting heroes Canberra United, who took out the Westfield W-league with a 5-0 win over Adelaide United in their 11th round bout on Sunday.

Adelaide fought a good fight, keeping a dangerous-looking Canberra at bay for the first 25 minutes, until defenses were breached to see two quick-fire goals via Striker Michelle Heyman, taking her season total to an imprssive 12.

Taryn Hemmings also scored two of her own late in the match with a last-minute fifth goal following from Ashleigh Sykes to seal the game and W-league title against solid but outmached opponents.

Adelaide had various chances to find the back of the net throughout, but were unable to beat substitute keeper Aroon Clansey’s reflexes.

Canberra United finished in first place on the tournament ladder, not once conceding a loss all season.

Nah, you were right in your original post Consumer – Canberra are officially league champions, as they have topped the league. They’ll need to win the Grand Final to do the Championship/Premiership double.

I think if they win their semi-final, they’ll then get to host the Grand Final in the capital which would be FARKEN TOPS.

Well done Canberra United, they’ve gone the whole season undefeated and that’s a fantastic achievement.
And they HAVE won the League Championship by coming first, so are already the Champions. If they win the Grand Final then they will also be Premiers, so there’s nothing premature about it.
Bring on those finals and I’ll be out there in green!

Great work to the team. I like hearing about achievements on the field instead of the tripe that happens to professional players, mostly men, off the field.

Hopefully this and more positive media attention, will get more women playing this marvelous sport.

Bit premature to say they took out the entire competition, they have finished on top of the ladder, but I’m certain they need to win some finals before being crowned champions.

This is correct, my mistake. There weren’t any finals listed on the W-league site, but it looks like the semis will start on the 21st January, grand final 28th.

Great effort and deserved result. I like watching the women play soccer as they don’t take dives and carry on like pussies. I think it was meant to be a womens’ game all along. Hope they win the grand final as well. Raiders and Brumbies should take note.

Bit premature to say they took out the entire competition, they have finished on top of the ladder, but I’m certain they need to win some finals before being crowned champions.
