Canberra urbexing in 2011?

I’ve moved down here from way up north and I’m interested in getting started in urban exploring.

I’m doing a few storm water drains on sunday, but does anyone know any forgotten tunnels or abandoned buildings?

If you want to stay anonymous, just send me a PM or email. I’m also on twitter by the same name.

I’m exploring the old threads on this topic and fascinated by the idea of exploring but I have to agree with everyone who says it’s likely anything interesting is either torn down immediately or military and you’d be an idiot to go there.

Back in the mid 80’s myself and 2 friends entered the old Paddy’s River mine out at Cotter. We read about it in a book that my parents had called ‘Rambles around Canberra’. It had been bricked off but somebody had gone before us and we could just squeeze through. We left one guy outside and said if we’re not out in 1 hour go get help! Half way along there was a vertical shaft full of water you had to jump over. the mine ran about 100 meters in or so. All that’s left now are the railway tracks heading into the hillside, it’s long since caved all the way in. There’s also a few old abandoned mines down towards Michelago but these are on private property, we used to mess around in those too. Wouldn’t recommend that anyone enter an old abandoned mine though – we were young, foolish and lucky to get away with no harm done.

Finally, to everyone who sent me a message on facebook and twitter, thank you. I’ll be using this stuff well.

If you can send PMs here I have not figured out how to do it. Since I’m a genius at the most prestigious university in the known universe, I guess no one else has been able to figure it out either.
I know of some abandoned cars, and I have access to a drain, but currently it is full of rice and I have to unlock it. Mental note to self, buy a plunger this week end.
Sorry yeah, end of sarcasm mode. I’ll be interested in joining you.

We did know some forgotten tunnels, but we can’t remember where they are,.

First of all, you’re awesome. Second of all, I shouldn’t write when I’m stoned. Third of all, you’re still awesome.

By definition, forgotten tunnels have been forgotten…

Abandoned building come and go pretty damn quick in Canberra it seems.

A couple of past RA threads you might find interesting, although I’m guessing you found the RiotACT by googling Canberra Urbex, and so have probably seen them.

Indeed I have. Read all of them and planned this entire weekends trip from leads given by them. Cheers guys.

In the early 1980s my dumbass buddies and myself would ride our bikes around at a local hangout known as ‘The Dippers’. I doubt many folks would even remember them, and are probably long gone with the introduction of the Gungahlin Drive extension.

Nearby was a cool storm water tunnel system that we would ride our bikes into when we got bored with smoking and lighting fires. The little tunnel system starts up near the intersection of Belconnen Way and Fairax Streets O’Connor and terminates down near Miller Street – right next to Macarthur Avenue. We used to get easy walk-in access from next to the intersection of Fairax and Dryandra Streets. Should provide a solid afternoons entertainment if they are still accessable.

FFS check the weather before exploring, and only use your newfound knowledge for good 🙂
