Took the dog for a walk and a protest broke out, as a bit over 1000 people came together for the Canberra Walk Against Warming. Seems to be working as its bloody cold and cloudy today.

Senator Bob Brown was there along with MLA Shane Rattenbury, ACT Greens Senate candidate Lin Hatfield Dodds, local Getup and See Change organisers, plus lots of kids, dogs, people on bikes and students.

Favourite chant of the day was, “Save the planet, tax the rich, spend it on renewable shit”. Another was, “Julia and Tony, your policies are phoney”.

All this Aussie ‘green’ stuff is just a joke. (Now there is a flame trolling post! :-))

How many of these ‘green’ folk eat in restaurants/cafes that have outdoor heaters? How many have double glazing & decent insulation? The list just goes on… No, i dont know any of those folk in that picture and I dont know that I’m not wrong. Some may indeed not own a car and live in double-brick, insulated, double glazed houses like most of the cicilized world. But from the ‘green’ folk I’ve chatted to I’m guessing the number is quite small.

As an example, I spent a week in Jervis bay recently and went to a restaurant/camp that proudly boasts its ‘EcoTourism’ certificate all over its web home page. When we got there we found Bunnings propane outdoor heaters everywhere!!! Fantastic! So, many folk can see my sceptisism….

serious advocates for action concerning global warming don’t generally believe we all need to cycle hemp bicycles and dig clay hobbit holes beside our permaculture… they eat in restaurants, having driven there, and they go home and turn on the heater – what they rightly want to happen is that these things happen [ie, the light comes on when you flick the switch] but through less carbon-emitting processes. basically, i don’t care how the phone works or the electricity gets to my switch, but that it does. however, i know there can be ways to make this happen that don’t involve so much pollution, and i rekkun there are options that require some political will to enact (as well as, as you point out, ones that require personal will, too).

and without speaking with these people, how do ascribe views to them? or rather, why?

I know many people who were at this event, none of them actually know much about climate change nor about what needs to be done about it. Try talking to them about photovoltaic cells, base load power or hydrogen fuel cells and they stare blankly.

ANU Student Collective got together before hand to have a pancake breakfast before doing the walk. The invites said “come enjoy pancakes and help fight climate change”. The funny thing is these people really believe that dressing up, eating and drinking and walking is part of the solution to climate change.

Climate change is real and we need solutions. Those solution will come with deep economic and technological changes. Already, car companies are indicating that by 2040, over half of vehicles will be hydrogen based. Hybrids are only a stop-gap measure.Informed debate and innovation is the key.

What we don’t need are kids with slogans screaming “Cut emission by 40% this decade” without knowing what it means or having any idea of how it will be done.

If only they put so much effort into something that actually mattered.

1000 people? I’d like you to be my accountant. Aint no way there was that many. Apart from the general shower and soap avoiding matted hair types there were people of all ages out to make sure that big business pay their way by increasing applicable taxes – and then pass those higher costs onto consumers.

Dressing in costumes and having a giant bug (costumed performer on stilts) lead the march just shows how seriously people take this. Apparently these people do believe in the voodoo of warming issues and take environmental concerns seriously so I was surprised to see gas burners chugging away at the form up area adding to the dreaded carbon levels and ballons drifting away in the atmosphere, undoubtedly off to choke fairy penguins and potteroos.

Hopefully they got something out of it and the inner warmth will replace the need to put on the heater once home.
