With storms yesterday and predicted for every day this week, the Canberra BOM weather radar has chosen a bad time to go off line. The statement on the relevant page is:
CANBERRA RADAR IS U/S UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. ANY INCONVENIENCE IS REGRETTED.
I presume U/S means “up sh*t creek”?

As an alternative you can get an idea what is happening around Canberra from the Wagga radar:
http://mirror.bom.gov.au/products/IDR552.loop.shtml

However you should note that the Wagga radar tends to be rather less sensitive than the rest of them. Used to live right in the middle of the Wagga and Yarrawonga sites and the difference for the same storms was always remarkable. So a storm that might be up in the reds and higher here may only be in the yellows on the Wagga screen.

UPDATED: It’s back! and there was much rejoicing! How much does it cost to set up one of these things?

A friend of mine rang the Bureau when the radar was down to find out what was going on.

She was told the radar had been struck by lightning.

Raining over the dam catchment does not necessiarly = water in dams as the soil is so dry there is no run-off to run off into the dams. Similarly any sub-soil movement is greatly impeded due to soil moisture content (or lack of).
And how cool is the radar now -great big blob of blue and green!

Mmm severe storm warning is current.
Radar looks nice.
I’ll be cycling home in that, fun.

Now we have a Severe Thunder Storm warning issued at 1:10pm

U/S = Unserviceable

Canberra Radar Update
“IDR99940 CANBERRA RADAR IS U/S, A REQUIRED PART WON’T BE AVAILABLE UNTIL WED 21/02/2007. AT THIS STAGE WE HOPE THAT THE RADAR WILL BE WORKING SOMETIME IN THE AFTERNOON OF WEDNESDAY 21/02/2007. ANY INCONVENIENCE IS REGRETTED. 20/0718Z”

I am suffering severe radar withdrawal.

Weatherzone’s New South Wales composite radar view seems to do a decent job. Combining Sydney and Wagga Wagga almost fills the job of the Canberra radar.

It’s worth noting that the Wagga Wagga radar is only a part-time radar as it is used to track weather balloons at various times during the day. The bureau claims that this happens up to four times per day, for 90 minutes at a time.
04:15 – 05:45 EDT
10:15 – 11:45 EDT
16:15 – 17:45 EDT
22:15 – 23:45 EDT

Also the Canberra radar went offline at some time between 8:20pm and 8:30pm on Saturday.

Gaaarghk!

An oft used website… hope it gets fixed soon.

This is useful:

but no cool radar images.
