Today the Australian Bureau of Statistics release their Social Atlas series, which contains lots of juicy demographic type information about the capital cities, as collected at the last Census in 2006. It contains lots of interesting information on our fair city, from population, eduction and housing, to income and the like.

You can see a copy of Canberra’s Social Atlas on the ABS website.

Some interesting tidbits:

  • Canberra’s population at Census was 356, 756 – this equates to 142 people per square kilometre.
  • 59.6 per cent of students attended a government school.
  • There were 6 695 unemployed people in Canberra.
  • 12 029 employed persons traveled to work using public transport.
  • 62 571 persons living in Canberra undertook some form of volunteer work.

Excellent. Downloading now – thanks for the link.

this equates to 142 people per square kilometre

Only if we spread out a lot. Many suburbs have densities of more than 3000 people per square kilometre – and we still can’t get a decent bus service.

Also interesting to also note that:

* The far north and the deep south recorded the highest populations of young children

* The inner north and inner south recorded the highest populations of elderly (> 75 years) Canberra has the second lowest proportion of elderly after Darwin, in comparison to the other capitals.

* 5,283 Canberrans work in NSW but 11,115 Queanbeyanites work in the ACT.

* 22.5% of all households had an average gross weekly income of $2500 or more.

* 74% of houses have internet access with 52% having broadband internet. However, only 40% of Queanbeyan homes have broadband.
