Over the weekend the World 24 Hour Solo Mountain Bike Championships were held in Canmore, Alberta Canada. Quite a few Aussies (particularly Canberrans) qualified this year, showing that recent investments in mountain biking, like Stromlo Forest Park are paying off. Local hardman James Williamson proved he is the toughest guy by taking out the mens elite category with 16 laps of the very demanding 20km course (yes, that’s 320km on dirt in 24 hours!). It was a great day for Australia with Aussies Jason English and Mark Fenner completing the podium. In the elite women’s category Katrin Van der Spiegel took 2nd place for the Aussies. The rest of the Canberra contingent put in solid performances with Joel Donney scoring 2nd place in under 25 men; Jason McAvoy also scored 2nd in mens 35-39; Anthony Manning was close behind in 4th; and RiotACT’s 2007 man of Movember Andrew Remely 7th in mens 35-39.

The 24 Hours of Adrenaline blog has a video of James finishing, including a rather “interesting” post race interview.

Note to media: Don’t expect a resonable interview from people after they have been racing for 24 hours without a break.

Nice one. Great to see. As for thr interview, what do you expect from a bloke that has ridden 320km for 24hrs straight! Good on ya James. A tough ride.

I guess it was better than the interview Willo had after winning the Scott 24 in 2006, although I reckon Gordo still takes the cake – they should put that in the dictionary under “shattered”.

Onya JAMES and all the rest of the Canberra and Australian riders!!!

What was wrong with that interivew!? It was MILES more coherent than the one Gordo did after he won the world title in 2006!
