John Hargreaves is taking credit for a drop in littering in the ACT.

The Keep Australia Beautiful National Litter Index released today shows a substantial decline in the number of litter items across sites surveyed in the ACT. Items per 1,000 m2 have dropped to 56 compared to last year’s results and a national average of 68.

“The ACT results are favourable in comparison with the national averages for the number and volume of litter identified in the survey,” said Mr Hargreaves.

“Whilst litter remains primarily a community attitude concern, the ACT Government has initiated or supported several programs aimed at raising public awareness to address the issue of littering.

Well done everyone… keep up the good work.

Political backlash.

I even wondered if there was no number from last year, and they just used the national average.

“Items per 1,000 m2 have dropped to 56 compared to last year’s results and a national average of 68”

Anyone else as cynical as I am, or does the very carefully worded text seem a little too tricky. Does “have dropped to 56 compared to last year’s results” mean that last years result was 57, 56.5, 56.0001. If it’s a significant improvement, tell us it’s dropped from 89 to 56, or whatever. This wording sounds too much like a politician looking for something good to say near an election. Somebody prove me wrong and I’ll retract.

I don’t smoke in my car, and i butt out in a bin. I will even carry the butt to a bin if none are near.

it is up to the individual, and as i don’t want a little kid eating a cigarette butt, I put mine in the trash.

still cheaper that cancer removal.

I’ve got a suggestion for John Hargreaves – put some bins back in public parks and bustops, and reduce litter by about 50%.

fnaah you are welcomed from the darkside.

And, not “count” but fine the felons $1,000 a butt!

it’ll cost that much for a pack, soon….

I subscribe to the belief that it’s not littering if:
1) There’s no bin around.
2) You can balance the litter in nifty ways.

It probably still makes Indian chiefs cry, though.

Someone gets paid to count litter?

I’m not sure littering is a felony either. We don’t even have felonies here.

(Note: having just given up, I am an officially reformed felon. An ex-con, I guess.)

He should spend five minutes out of his cosy office to see the thousands of cigarette butts littering the gutters, footpaths, drains and gardens around my office precinct.

If Hargreaves was serious he would employ rangers to issue on the spot fines to these dirty felons.
