Canberrans are being encouraged to report illegal activity by outlaw motorcycle gangs to Crimestoppers with a new campaign launched by Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, ACT Chief Police Officer, Rudi Lammers, and the ACT Chairman of Crime Stoppers Australia, Bryan Roach

The awareness Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (OMCGs) Awareness Rewards campaign is in support of ACT Policing’s Taskforce Nemesis.

Mr Corbell said that while the level of activity by outlaw motorcycle gangs was low in the ACT, Canberra was not immune to the influence or activity of these gangs.

“The ACT Government, along with ACT Policing, is committed to ensuring OMCG-related activity remains low in Canberra with a whole-of-government approach being undertaken. This means taking an aggressive approach to combating the potential threats caused by illegal OMCG activity in the ACT.”

“Through the dedicated team of investigators, which forms Taskforce Nemesis, ACT Policing will actively target people who choose to engage with criminals groups and get involved in criminal activity.”

Taskforce Nemesis, launched on 1 August 2014, is a dedicated team within ACT Policing’s Criminal Investigations to track, disrupt and arrest those members of outlaw motorcycle gangs involved in criminal activities such as drug trafficking, illegal firearms, money laundering, threatening behaviour, acts of violence, extortion and corruption. Taskforce Nemesis is an extension of a team that has existed for several years within ACT Policing to target serious and organised crime within the territory.

The three-month Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Awareness Rewards campaign calls on Canberrans to support the police effort as, like any form of criminal behaviour, police rely on information from the public to assist in keeping our city safe.

Information received by Crime Stoppers throughout the campaign will be investigated by Taskforce Nemesis. Increased rewards of up to $2,000 are available for reports that lead to successful prosecutions involving criminal gangs, or the recovery of weapons or drugs connected to criminal gang activity.

Taskforce Nemesis dovetails with Australia’s multi-agency task force, Operation Morpheus, created by the Serious and Organised Crime Coordination Committee (SOCCC) to target OMCGs nationally.

The campaign urges the public to report information about OMCG involvement in the sex industry, security industry, illicit drugs, firearms, extortion and money laundering through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at https://act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

Police are always urging people do report things. It isn’t an offence to ride a motor bike or to be a member of a community. By all means report a crime if you see one. But don’t be too surprised if you don’t. ‘Crime isn’t a problem in Canberra at all’ . That is on record by Simon Corbell. Its not often a politician will concede that publicly. Let police investigate their concerns if they have some.

wattos23 favoutite bikie gangs were featured in a report on ABC TV 7.30 last night allegedly collecting “donations” for one of the trade unions appearing before the Royal Commission into Trade Unions and their associations.

The clear message from the ACT Police is “if you want to break the law, drive a car.”

So who do we want controlling drugs in the ACT?
At least the Rebs. have some rules they abide by

People, please make a distinction between the average Jap bike riding motorcyclist and a member of a patch gang.
BTW, I ride a pommy Triumph…

Therein lies the problem. The media has collectively managed to blur the issue so much that anyone riding a Hog is seen as a criminal. But I’m pretty sure this is what the legislators in Qld and NSW want to happen so they can justify their questionable legislation.

Yes we are very good in this country of targeting a group rather than the crime. I realise that bikie gangs do commit a lot of crime, but stopping a bikie gang from existing won’t stop the crime from occuring. Just like assuming all muslims are terrorists who want to get you. I’m glad i’m able to be reasonable and rational about these things. I feel sorry for people who feel the need to target a group, because they are so worried about something that is unlikely to affect them.

So, what you are saying is that bikie gangs are victims and if the gangs didn’t exist a “lonewolf” element on the fringes of the bikie gang would do the crime.
I am sure I have heard that victim and “lonewolf” analogy somewhere else in the past week but I can’t quite put my finger on it now.

I would thing that anyone riding a pig would be charged with animal cruelty.

I used to be a security guard at the Chisholm coles back when the Rebs frequented the tavern. They were great, have a yarn, wander through drunk and grab their stuff, pay for it. Once they left young macho dirtbags took up residence at the tav. Come in drunk or on ice, try to fight security, yell sexual slurs at the staff, try to reach over and steal from the till.

I’d rather more bikies than general macho douchebag young blokes and wont be assisting in this campaign to target a minority of our community who are usually well behaved, but might “raise their funds” in a way our government doesn’t like.

I haven’t noticed Rebs at the Chisholm tav for about 7 years , after the extension of the place took away their parking space.
One sight you may see now is a good number of middle aged people leaving after one of their very successful bistro meals. Would suggest DK you make a return to the area. By the way, you sure all the younguns came from the Tav? bloody big club across the road.

I saw a bunch of bikies doing their annual kids for cancer toy run a few times. I saw one J walkig too. Does that count?
Generally bikies are just pretty nice people who happen to ride motorbikes.

They are well mannered when they are debt collecting also.
