Canberra's anti-gay psychologist in the news again

After gaining media prominence by uttering his misogynist homophobic views and implying they were backed by psychological science, the Psychological Board placed restrictions on Philip Pocock’s practice. He is now apparently appealing the decision of the national psychology registration board by complaining to the ACT administrative appeals tribunal.

Does anyone in the RiotAct hive know how this works? Can this Territory body challenge a national body? And will the Tribunal hear submissions from the public ?

The NPRB is a government agency who in turn established state/territory level boards. It’s not a national body like the AMA. Therefore it’s an administrative decision and is challengeable.

You do realise the AMA is a union, don’t you? It’s not a regulatory body. It’s there to protect the interest of its paying members. It doesn’t register doctors, or have any other official status. It’s just very good at projecting a particular image.

I don’t feel threatened by gays, muslims or boat people. I have to wonder why so many people do lately??

It’s nothing more than trash media whipping up stories to shock the great unwashed, so they can capture viewers and increase advertising revenue.

Which is why we need decent independent media.

Agree and people with a particular political agenda use it, because they know there is no threat to them, but if they can make the threat seem real, they can “fix” the problem and win votes also. Of course anyone who disagrees is then called a greenie or similar, even though its mostly those of us who are in the moderate voter/swinging voter area that realise this is both sides that try to do this.

To think a Liberal gov with Turnbull would be so much better than the crap we have now.

I felt the same way for years until…….. I was accosted by 2 homosexuaul muslims with moustaches on a boat trying to convert me to their way of life. They said stuff like: “It’s not weird, its just halal that’s all.”

But how can you take a bloke like him seriously? I mean after 10 years of seeing DWTS, The Block, Australia’s got something or other and Australian Idolatry. You could say that it’s almost un-Australian what he is preaching. We like our takeaway Asian, our cars German, our wool from NZ and our holidays in Bali. At the same time we have grown accustomed to our kebabs Lebanese, our Air conditioning mechanics Rhodesian and our hairdressers flaming. This is just how life goes.

If he were truly serious about his convictions then he should lose the moustache as it is the equivalent to a diplomatic passport to any gay mardi gras in the world, just saying.

When you look at him and you start to think about possible Steppenwolff inspired campaign slogans:

Well, you don’t look at my behind
Why don’t you come with me
On Pocock’s magic moustache ride

Hasn’t David Pocock suffered enough missing two seasons in a row without having his namesake making the news again?

Not yet, everytime I hear his name I think of Po and the thought of Teletubbies having genitals makes me laugh.

Goodness you’ve given him a PhD that he has never earned! Why not call him professor or pope while you are at it!

He can think whatever he likes, but he keeps trying to present it as supported by science, psychology, by the church or conservative politics – and of course, the stuff he says is his own invention

Funny how people who want to disrespect others try to pretend that respected institutions support their views

What he also isn’t allowed to do as a psychologist is deliberately hurt an already vulnerable group

Not really politicial correctness at all. Basic human rights. Gay people were doing nothing to hurt him. He is the one on the attack pushing his extremist views and persecuting gay people.

Another O added strategically to Pocock would make for a very ironic surname indeed.

Ouch 🙂

You’re an idiot who has no idea what you’re talking about. AATs are appointed by government like anyone else. They’re apolitical in conducting their jobs.

There’s no such thing as constitutional free speech in this country. When you’re a psychologist persecuting a sub-group of the community who have much higher rates of mental health issues and suicide, you don’t have the right to pass off your stupid, bigoted opinions as psychology or science. Those opinions do not fall into either discipline.

Appealing to the appropriate State/Territory tribunal is exactly how it’s supposed to be:

Most AAT’s are comprised of left wing loonies.

Associations, Boards of Registration, ‘peak’ bodies and the like will have approved Articles of Association and Codes of Conduct, or equivalent, which their members will have agreed to.

Somewhere in there will be a few ‘catch-all’ clauses that allow the Board to take steps against errant members … phrases like ‘conduct that brings the industry into disrepute’ is popular.

Appealing to the Tribunal sounds like a further bid for notoriety to me. He’d be better off spending the money on a good shrink.
