Canberra's Christian Radio seeking big money

I was as surprised as anyone to discover that Canberra has a Christian Radio station.

But the All Seeing Eye has picked up a story on the Uniting Church’s Insight mag about 91.9’s fundraising efforts.

“The Rise and Survive appeal is critical to the future for 1Way FM’s radio work across the Canberra region,” Chairman of Canberra Christian Radio Brett Anderson said.

Mr Anderson said that the station had set a goal of raising $150,000 in a three-week campaign, beginning November 1, 2010.

Money raised would be used to fund the necessary transmission upgrade, with estimates placing the cost of lifting the equipment at as much as $80,000.

Good luck to them.

One of the advertisements 91.9 run is for miracle healing rooms in Fyshwick. “I’ve got emphesema,” one of the lasses bubbles away. She sounds like a snow bunny reporter all perk and zest. But instead of announcing that the snow is fresh and ready for action, this inexplicably bubbly soul tells me that the Capital Healing Rooms are great and that no appointment is needed and there is no cost. It always leaves me feeling unnerved.

Oh NO!! I have this station tuned in as my wake up station in the morning, I’ll have to find another station if they go down 🙁 It is a great station to wake up to, nothing gets you to wake up and turn the radio off like a preacher screaming that we are all going to hell…

I’ll give them $5 each time they play ‘F#$ck Your God’ by Deicide.

Or ‘Closer’ by Nine Inch Nails

Careful, you never know what they’ll play at 4am for your dollar.

I’ll double it if they’ll play “Plastic Jesus” after it.

I find this paragraph disturbing. Until church groups start paying taxes I think they should but out of government policy.

+1

What they do with their money will only become their business when they’re on an equal footing with every other business. Until then the rest of us are subsidising them, whether we like it or not.

“…it’s imperative that we keep broadcasting in our community, which contains the nation’s leaders and policy makers.”

Even if the leaders are only here for a few weeks a year….

The public servants who develop policy, however, are here all year round.

I suspect the nation’s leaders and policy makers don’t listen anyway.

“We are the only dedicated Christian media outlet in the ACT and we believe it’s imperative that we keep broadcasting in our community, which contains the nation’s leaders and policy makers.”

Heh, suppose optimistically that 3% of the Canberra/Queanbeyan region’s 400k people actually listen to Christian radio and can be bothered to make a donation, then they need an average donation of $12.5 per person.

If they get a couple of big donations from a few rich listeners there’s a chance they could come close.

I’d guess churches are going to be writing the cheques that matter.

I’ll give them $5 each time they play ‘F#$ck Your God’ by Deicide.
