Oh, and you can buy grapes from Coonawarra vineyards and truck the grapes anywhere to be made and still call it Coonawarra. Many wines you buy with Coonawarra on the label were not made in Coonawarra or even SA.

Eden Road is pretty new. Really only going as is for two years. They are local in sourcing a fair whack of their fruit from the Holt/Weetangera vineyard established when Hardy’s Kamberra was operating.

By sourcing fruit from nearby regions (Hilltops/Young, Tumbarumba, Gundagai, plus Canberra District), they manage to get some good wines accross a mix of styles and pricepoints. Decent people, putting out good gear.

And Holden, the Coonawarra GI process ended up exactly the opposite of what you suggest. The region’s final shape extends well beyond the ‘cigar’ of terra rossa soils, beyond even those areas next to the cigar, and stretches out to include distant vineyards such as the Croser/Petaluma Sharefarmers vineyard. Growing grapes a few paddocks away, is a bit different to buying them in from around the state. Last I heard Coonawarra went through a Champagne like drama that meant for a winery to be able to label its wines with “Coonawarra” the grapes had to be, as the label says, from Coonawarra, as defined by the Terra Rossa soil. Apparently a few nearby makers were trading off the name.

A great result for Eden Road, well deserved.

But how did they win ‘Best NEW Winery’? They aren’t new? Strange.

I bought seven cases last week. Top notch stuff but geez I wish they’d open the cellar door on the weekend.
