The SMH has an AAP story on Canberra’s Electro Optic Systems (EOS) who are set to ride the coming boom in tracking space junk after the Americans made it a priority at recent AUSMIN meetings.

A leader in the field of tracking orbiting satellites and junk, EOS is already operating laser space-debris tracking stations in Western Australia and the ACT.

The company’s chief executive, Ben Greene, said most advanced economies were highly dependent on satellites for communication, navigation, entertainment, internet, resource management, global monitoring, weather forecasting and defence.

These satellites represented a combined investment of more than $600 billion, Dr Greene said.

“Space debris is a serious threat to this infrastructure and these applications, and EOS has been developing cost-effective debris solutions for more than a decade, based on its world-leading laser tracking capabilities,” he said in a statement.

A look at their website suggests the ACT space-debris tracking station is at Stromlo.

It’s the green laser that can be seen coming from that direction at times. They’ve been experimenting with it for some time, I remember seeing it at least 6 years ago.

I thought it was Stanhopes all seeing eye.

MTB’ers will know it as the <a href=http://maps.google.com.au/maps?ie=UTF8&ll=-35.316001,149.010133&spn=0.003335,0.007172&t=h&z=18big all-seeing eye thing at the top of the downhill track. It’s also where road cyclists turn and head back down.
