There’s nothing quite like digging through an op shop looking for that hidden gem, that unique clothing item, or valuable homeware. If you love scoring a bargain, enjoy the thrill of the hunt, or would like to save on everyday bits and pieces, a trip to the op shop is always fun.
In this article we’ll share with you five fantastic op shops in the Canberra region.
What to Look for in an Op Shop
While all op shops provide a valuable service to our community, some are simply better stocked than others. Here’s what we look for in the best op shops in the region:
- A great range of products. From furniture and homewares, to women’s wear and kids’ toys, the best op shops have a huge range of products.
- Good prices. Charity-run op shops always offer fantastic prices for their products. That being said, some up-market vintage and second-hand stores may call themselves ‘op shops’ when, in fact, they charge premium prices.
- A good cause. When shopping at an op shop, you can feel good about giving your money to a charitable cause.

Here are just five of the many fantastic op shops in Canberra and surrounds.
The Fyshwick Salvo’s is the biggest op shop in all of Canberra – it’s spread across two whole levels. With an impressive range of furniture, clothing, toys, homewares, linens, and more, you’re sure to find exactly what you’re looking for.
What’s more, this Salvo’s often hosts discount ticket days, so you can score a serious bargain.
On the north side of Canberra, the Salvo’s in Mitchell is one of the best stocked op shops. This Salvo’s offers long aisles of clothing, a second-hand furniture section, and a new section, where you can pick up brand-name items for a fraction of the price.
This neat and tidy op shop is a firm favourite, especially for furniture. If you see something you like, grab it right away, as things tend to run out the door at lightning speed. Keep in mind, this Salvo’s has a fairly small toy section.
Located a short drive from the Salvo’s in Mitchell, it’s worth dropping into the Vinnies, too. Although it’s relatively small, this op shop is great if you’re looking for second-hand books. That being said, a few clothing gems and unique homeware items have also been discovered here.
Another must-do in Mitchell, The Green Shed isn’t actually an op shop but a huge second-hand store. Located at the Resource Centre (AKA the tip), the items for sale have been donated to the store instead of being tossed into landfill. It’s pretty much impossible to leave The Green Shed empty handed!
