Canberra's GPSports Systems to do away with the dodgy forward pass?

The Economist has an article on a Canberra based company GPSports Systems and their revolutionary work with football:

GPSports is pushing even further, developing an integrated alert system to send a beep to a referee’s earpiece within a quarter of a second of the ball going out of play, passing between goal posts or, in rugby, traveling forward from a pass, something forbidden by the rules of the game. Mr Hawes says the ball’s location can be determined to within 1cm, and expects to test the technology early next year.

Exciting times.

Agreed, and it’s good for you too. Not just kicking a footy either. Perhaps I should have said professional/spectator sport.

Putting on your boots and strip, running around a paddock and kicking a ball with some mates on a clear winters day all sounds like good cheap fun to me. I used to do it, and my kids do it now.

However, I work in the technology game, so I understand the huge effort that must’ve gone into developing something like this. I just think that perhaps the world would be a better place if that intellectual endeavour had been directed elsewhere.

I think the same thing about a whole bunch of activities such as advertising, most legal nonsense etc.

And don’t get me started about the Sydney mod that is currently recruiting mathematicians, physicists and computer scientists to work on developing computer systems for high frequency algorithmic share trading. They are among the arsehats who have ruined the world financial system with their stupid computer programs. If I could vomit on those people, I would.

I’m sure GPSports have done thorough research……but this has already been invented by the same engineering company that invented the MP3. Infact it seems alot more accurate than the proposed GPSports system, it’s referenced off 4 points in each corner and can allow the referee to determine whether a try has been scored by measuing its exact position on the field, the angle/lie in which the ball is sitting and at what height the ball is and all of this is done in real time. Only problem is, the rugby community is a little slow on the uptake because of its old school mentality, ‘do we really want to take out the human factor of saying whether it’s a try or a forward pass?’ The system however has been introduced into soccer letting the ref know if the ball has gone out or into the goal etc. So it seems that the GPSports system is not revolutionary at all.

I remember seeing a practical demonstration on telly recently, where they had rugby players demonstrating what happens when a ball is passed legally while on the run. In every instance, what looked to the naked eye to be a perfectly legal pass, actually traveled forward – ie, the receiver was always ahead of where the ball actually left the passer’s hands, even though it was passed backwards. I guess the laws of physics don’t really care what the rules of the game say.

Which is probably part of the reason why in Rugby League, the rule has been changed to say that what is important is the direction the ball leaves the hands, not what happens to it in the air.

It’ll be interesting to see whether they’ve developed a system that can handle the different outcomes of balls passed while standing still or moving slowly, compared to made running flat out.

Ignorance incoming: It probably started as something from the US military, so this may be a more harmless use. If not exactly productive.

I’m sure they have calculated how to account for drift etc, but have they taken into account the morons who commentate 🙂

Can’t understand why it’s taken so long to develop something like this. Great to see GPSprts at the forefront.
