We all know that energy needs fuel, your car or truck needs petrol, your home needs heating at this time of year especially using gas as energy, your office printer wouldn’t work without electricity.
Just like those devices, work crews around Canberra need to refuel their most precious asset – their human capital. And not just work crews; meetings of public servants, tradies and anyone else!
Every day across the ACT, work crews are busy making sure the city ticks, ActewAGL workers make sure our electricity networks operate, Jemena crews make sure the gas network sings and boy do those regulators sing with natural gas pouring through them in winter.
Icon Water crews fix our water and sewerage mains. iiNet crews fix the high speed broadband networks, Telstra fixes the old copper wires. Our police patrol the streets, our ambulance workers tend to the injured.
All these crews would not function without people and every day these lovely people that make our city tick need sustenance and energy to make things work. So where do they go? Where is their favourite place to meet the team, have breakfast, a coffee or a bite to eat at lunch?
Well, the secret is out, their is a wonderful gem in the heart of Canberra. It is neatly tucked away in the Wetlands of Fyshwick, most of us turn left off Dairy Road, but sometimes we turn right or go straight before heading right onto 4/1 Dairy Rd, Fyshwick. This takes you to the secret hiding place in Canberra which makes the heart and muscles work, the Station Bar & Café at the Fyshwick Wetlands.
It’s 6am, most people are still in bed, but not at the Station Bar & Café, where coffee is a brewing and eggs are being smashed. Daniel works the equipment, whilst Sandra does all the prep. The lovely staff are welcoming and friendly, greeting everyone with a smile and a early g’day for the start of the day.
Orange, blue and yellow uniforms flash, there is banter and the usual larrikinism, but most importantly work crews gather to discuss the day ahead and what is planned or what the latest news is on for the day. Work is prioritised and organised and the team continues to bond over a cuppa.
Sandra said “I love my job, everyday I come to work I think that we are doing something special for the community. Yes the world is full of sports stars and celebrities and Royal babies. But what really counts is the everyday work the community needs to survive. I think we serve a very special purpose in the community. We are the Station where teams meet. We feed them and fuel them for the day, we replenish their batteries when they are low, quietly and efficiently we help this city tick.”
Bob, from one of the work teams, said, “We love this place. The coffee is excellent, the food is so awesome and well priced. Their is plenty of space for us to park our trucks and vans and the staff are just great, but hey, why are you letting everyone know, we don’t want the secret out.”
