Canberra's Patty Mills at the Spurs

Thanks to @chriswalski for the tip about an NBA.com story on Canberra’s Patrick Mills who’s doing rather well playing basketball for the San Antonio Spurs.

The article doesn’t paint a pretty picture of Australia’s past, which is unfortunate considering the considerable government assistance that got him where he is today.

It is good to see him getting a decent opportunity, he always looked like he belonged when he was on-court with the Blazers, and even seemed to be a bit of a fan favourite there.

I would like to see Mills go one-on-one with Jeremy Lin. Underdog match up of the year.

Pretty sure Mills would win that one, given the current state of Lin’s knee…

He’s killing it with the Spurs! He’s finally being given some court time and he’s putting in good numbers. He’ll do well there.

I believe the other indigeneous Australian to make it to the NBA would be Nathan Jawai, based on Googling and a process of elimination (i.e. all the others in the list on Wikipedia are either naturalised Americans or whiter than the driven snow).

(Also, he’s named later in the article. Probably should have finished reading before commenting)

If it makes anyone feel better, they’re never shy about mentioning their own nation’s history of racism in stories about african-american players. It seems to be kind of a salve to their national guilt to see someone succeed in spite of past misdeeds.

to be fair – a couple of bucks is a drop in the pond considering how hard we have shat on indiginous australians over the last 200+ years.

I would like to know who the other indiginous NBA player was…?

I’m with Johnboy on this one, I think the article definitely skews the analysis to one side of the story.

The reality is that Patrick Mills has been afforded some fantastic life opportunities and it’s not all down to one or two factors, there are a lot of reasons behind that.

NB, the more we keep going over history, the harder it is to just move on and get on with things. No amount of thinking about it ever changes anything.

I think you miss the point Johnboy

The great story highlighted in this article is how the Basketball Canberra’s club “The Shadows” is supporting young people both indigenous and non indigenous with his parents endeavour and motovation. The quite achievers within the ACT sports community. I hope Patty success raises the profile of what the parents have achieved in ACT sports.

On a different note stolen generations did happen and is something australian history should not shy away from.

Anyhow hope this makes the site and addresses more of the Canberra related content of the article.
