My mate Mike and I will be travelling from Brisbane to Darwin via Central Queensland in our crappy Mercedes. The trip will take us thought the most remote roads in Australia, through the Queensland outback, million acre cattle stations, several river crossings with crocs (yes, big crocs) and the Kakadu.

This isn’t just a Sunday Drive. We will be smelly, dirty, exhausted and ready to tear each others throats out; a true test of our friendship. But, we are doing it all to raise money for the Cancer Council as a part of the annual Sh*tbox Rally.

We bought Otto (our ’79 Mercedes that pre-dates us by 10 years) from under a tree and he came with a free car for parts…which we soon needed! Otto had been run on Vegetable Oil that the previous owner did not filter. This eventually caused poor Otto to clog up with calamari rings and stop running! However, Merc’s being Merc’s, we changed his filters, blew out his fuel lines and chucked on the diesel pump from is brother and hey presto! We had our sh*t-box!

We’ve been working hard over the past year to get the car ready, money raised and sponsorships happening. We are getting close to the start of the rally and it would be fantastic if plenty of Canberra locals could come along to our fundraiser and support the Cancer Council at Beer, BBQ and Trivia.

Saturday April 9th 2011
festivities start from 12 noon
Pearce Community Centre, Collett Place, Pearce
$15 per head
Live Band
to book a table (any number up to about 10 per table) contact Paul on 0424 754 034 or email paulstledger@me.com

If any Canberra businesses would like to offer help by donating (we will put your logo on the car for doing that), assisting us with things for the event (tables, and a large BBQ to save us from hiring would help!), helping us with prizes or in any way they feel they can, please contact me on 0424 754 034 or paulstledger@me.com

haha I know, but it’s the name and the spirit of the rally so we have to stick to it 😀 We both own w124’s a 300ce-24 and a 300e-24 so we know that anything of that era is far from a sh*tbox!

I’d rather push my w123 over the line than drive anything else!

I did figure as much, actually. W124 / M104 . . . noice. I read of the fund raiser in the MB ACT club mag the other day (I have an S202 / M112 C240T). I’ll try and get along if I can. Besides, being an ex-rally competitor (QRC and ARC) from way back, it’s only proper I provide some support for such a worthwhile endeavor.

Good luck with it!

Hang on, hang on . . . no W123 — especially OM series powered — really qualifies (or deserves to qualify) as a sh*t box. Would you rather be in a ’79 Mazda something?

Bet you blokes finish the event at least.

I was thinking the exact same thing, the W123 series are considered by many to be the pinnacle of Mercedes engineering, and with the exception of maybe the 240D, the 300D is just about the most bullet proof of them all.

Good luck with the rally.
