Chief Minister Stanhope is calling for volunteers to help out the Canberra Nara Candle Festival.

The festival is a celebration of Canberra’s sister-city relationship with Nara, in Japan, and is held in the Japanese garden of Canberra Nara Park, behind the Hyatt Hotel.

“Volunteers are needed to assist with the running of Festival by providing information to event patrons and setting up the event highlight – the display of 2000 candles,” Mr Stanhope said.

Stop being so cynical Mr Evil!

I just can’t help myself sometimes – it’s the Emo in me crying out!

To be fair, I’m guessing the “Jon Stanhope Memorial Aboretum” is making the event carbon neutral?

Are the candles carbon neutral?

The local rotary clubs do special exchanges too, school kids learn about another country, and they kicked in some money ($100,000?) after the bushfires.

It doesn’t cost much, makes some people happy, there’s bigger fish to fry really….

What on earth do we get out of the Nara sister city relationship? Some politicians and public servants partake in periodic junkets between the cities, but I don’t think that really justifies the charade.
