What is this supposed to accomplish, I wonder? If they want to prevent domestic violence, they should start by issuing restraining orders forbidding women who repeatedly acquire boyfriends that beat them from living with a man. Throw the women who hanker after bad boys in prison, and sterilise them. It’d do the gene pool no end of good.

If you ever have a son, I hope his dog dies.

You might have to explain that one.

Just a generic wish of bad fortune upon the stupid.

Ah… bit of a strange one, but fair enough.

It’s probably worth reminding readers (given all the responses are assuming female victims) that Joe Cinque was a victim of domestic violence at the hand of Anu Singh. I’d say he’s worth lighting a candle for.

Why?

I feel it is a worthwhile and constructive ceremony, it does not need approval from people who do not have any understanding of the issue, compassion for victims or the dead. Domestic violence is often well concealed and affects familes from every socio-economic and educational level. It does not just happen to ‘women who seek out bad boys’.

The post says the ceremony is to remember those who have died as a result of family or domestic violence. I believe remembering those whose lives ended as a result of violence can prompt a journey of healing, maybe cause people to seek help before they suffer the same fate, it can build resolve to not let generational domestic violence perpetuate, it can cause perpetrators to seek help, it can build community awareness of an issue that is under-reported, sometimes hidden or ignored.

The post does not say it is just about women, domestic violence can be perpertrated by any member of a household or family. As a foster carer I look after and have contact with children who have suffered many forms of abuse including domestic violence (some of these children have then become perpertrators themselves), I have male and female friends from school who grew up in violent and abusive households, my aunt, an educated and successful woman suffered at the hands of her late jealous husband, he wasnt like that all the time, he could also be wonderful. She tried to leave seveal times but his control over her, her business and threats to harm their children made her stay. These things can also happen to men, domestic violence against men is most definately under reported/under acknowledged.

Ignoring domestic violence can result in death, I believe reflecting on this and remembering those who have died as a result is a good thing if it can stop just one death.

It’s probably worth reminding readers (given all the responses are assuming female victims) that Joe Cinque was a victim of domestic violence at the hand of Anu Singh. I’d say he’s worth lighting a candle for.

That’s so wrong, in so many ways, that I don’t even know where to start. And I say that as a bloke who copped emotional abuse, verbal abuse, fists, feet and a glassing from my now ex wife.

To suggest that there are lots of women out there who repeatedly go out looking for blokes to beat them up indicates to me that you should head over to that current thread about finding a good psychiatrist in Canberra.

Lighting candles does nothing except misguides victims into believing they have a purpose worthy of ceremony. We call these “professional victims” . We cannot light candles for all the woes of the world can we. We would start a big fire.
