We’ve had a media release from the National Capital Attractions Association setting a trap for local politicians:
With the ACT election just weeks away, the National Capital Attractions Association (NCAA) is calling for candidates to address the dire situation associated withCanberra’s limited car parks within the Parliamentary Zone and servicing many of our popular national attractions.
Today marks the start of the NSW School Holidays, a busy time forCanberratourism due in part to Floriade. The frustration associated with the current parking and transportation situation will be acutely felt by visitors, and the ongoing economic impact associated with that frustration cannot be ignored.
The negative experiences associated with the lack of parking will only be exacerbated in 2013. With the Centenary of Canberra program highlighting the range of attractions and exhibitions that are expected to draw large crowds, many at the same time and to the same areas, the need for a holistic strategy to manage the transport and parking requirements for the potential influx of visitors is essential.
For a local candidate there are two perils here.
The first is that it’s a National Capital Authority issue. Trying to fix something you have no power over is an unrewarding task.
The second point is that any solution would be screwing the local voters who work around the Parliamentary Triangle to the benefit of interstate visitors and the operators of National Capital Attractions.
I’d be playing a straight bat to this one. But Segway hire from the Canberra Centre would be my choice! (with massive segway parking in the triangle of course)
