The Capital Arts Patrons Organisation is calling for applications from Canberran artists who would like access to fourteen grants ranging in value from $500 to $25,000. The grants are to support artists develop their careers and to assist with innovative community cultural projects.

Since its beginnings in 1983, CAPO has awarded in excess of 1.8 million dollars to over 330 artists and arts organisations. In 2012, CAPO’s 11 grant recipients received support to the value of over $60 000.

CAPO raises money through business sponsorship and donations, and through its annual art exhibition and auction. Artworks donated by Canberra’s leading and acclaimed artists are on show and for sale. The CAPO exhibition is widely regarded by critics and collectors as an important annual survey of art in our region.

In 2013, Canberra’s Centenary, the auction will be held at Canberra Museum and Gallery on Saturday November 23. CAPO president, Neil Doody says:

“CAPO’s the longest running philanthropic arts organisation in Australia and it’s great to be sharing a significant birthday with our city.”

When I saw CAPO in the heading I thought it referred to the awesome Council of Australian Powerlifting Organisations. But then I read the article and found that money was being wasted on the arts again. Silly me for thinking that money might be going to something that people would like.

glorious excess
wasted on the arts again –
joy and thought and breath

Real Australians (TM) like picking up and putting down heavy things
They don’t like stuff what provokes, or challenges, or just sings

I’ve heard that late entries will be accepted. This will be known as Amendment List CAPO New Entries (AL CAPONE)…

Dear Roundhead89,
Clearly people do like art: CAPO, which is and always has been entirely supported by donations and volunteers, is an example of how the people that do like it also put their money where their mouth is.

The link they have provided us for the application form and the guidelines doesn’t appear to work at the moment.

I’ve contacted them to see what’s happening.
