Car set alight in Kambah - Why?

burned out car

My car was burnt last night in a senseless act of vandalism.

I brought the car for my daughter, who was involved in a serious hit and run accident 4 years ago, so that she could attend doctors appointments and rehabilitation and have some sense of independence.

After the accident, and very lengthy hospital stay she had to learn to walk again which was by no means easy. Also burnt in the car was her entire medical history including x-rays, scans, ultrasounds and medical reports as she had attended another doctors appointment yesterday. These things cannot be replaced and are needed for her ongoing treatment.

To the vandals who did this awful unforgiveable thing, I hope that justice finds you.

Her husband lost his job on Friday due to the economic downturn, he’s looking desperately for another job and they cannot afford another car and neither can I. She is now effectively trapped in her home, as she can only walk very limited distances. If anyone has an economical small car available please let me know.

Why would someone do something so horrible?

Many thanks to the very kind people who offered support (including offering vehicles) on the forum.

To those questioning the insurance, the car had been insured up until last month, and did have current third party property damage insurance. We simply could no longer afford to insure it due to changed financial circumstances.

You do not always know when your circumstances will change. There but for the grace ….. go you or I

I think the policy would be more clearly written if it read “Theft; Fire; and third party”.

“Third party theft” makes no sense. *My* insurance will cover *you* if *your* car gets stolen?

The good old Oxford comma sorts that one out……Third party, fire, and theft.

why don’t you have 3rd party F&T?

How would that have helped?

Last time i checked, 3rd party fire and thieft covered damage to your car through fire and/or thieft.

I think 3rd party only covers the damage you cause to a 3rd party. Any damage to your own car is not covered. You’d need comprehansive to cover your own car. I have been known to be wrong at times though.

Obviously they dont have F&T

That’s why is asked “why don’t you have” rather than “Do you have..”.

It may sound silly, but imo unless you’re willing to absorb the cost of the loss yourself, then insurance should be factored in to any purchase (as well as rego, maintenance, and petrol).

I agree with you! However sometimes people find themselves in difficult situations like the above. Which is when the kind hearted and upstanding members of this great Territory help each other. i hope. lol

That sux severely, niceplacetolive. I hope they catch the scum who did it.

Why? Why aren’t there more police patrolling our suburbs? Why isn’t there a better/tougher justice system in the ACT?

Bet that if a speed camera was there, it wouldn’t have happened.

Have some compassion.

Obviously they dont have F&T – so dont be an unhelpful prick.

Because people are scum.

Speak for yourself. Not everyone hides behind a false gross generalisation to justify their own shortcomings and bad deeds.

Gross generalisation? Sure, not all people are scum. False? My personal experience living in a society is that in general people are in fact scum.

There’s also been a burnt out car on Learmonth for the past week – BMW with NSW number plates.

Not to say the majority of people in Tuggeranong aren’t good people, but it nonetheless has the highest rate of grubs per capita in Canberra, without a doubt. I used to live in Kambah, and due to lack of a garage I was forced to park my car on the street. Within the space of 6 months I had the badges stolen, 2 windows smashed, key-scratching down the entire length of the car, aerial broken off etc etc all in separate incidents. It really gets me down to think how I had managed to keep a 40 year old car in such great condition, only to have it systematically destroyed over a 6 month period by thoughtless vandals. It was the best car I ever owned and yet I ended up swapping the car for a case of beer for someone who was going to use it for parts.

I moved to Wanniassa to get away from it but it turned out being even worse so I gave up on Tuggeranong and moved to Belconnen. Guess what? 12 months later and I haven’t got a single bad word to say about the place.

Your family circumstances are very unfortunate, but you can’t take it personally. Believe me, scum don’t discriminate.

I bet you didn’t move to the Kambah/Wanniassa equivalent in Belcompton.

No, I didn’t move to Dunlop. But at least there are di&khead-free suburbs in Belconnen (Hawker, Weetangera, Aranda). Where are the Tuggers equivalents? I’ll pay Fadden but that’s it.

Really? There are absolutely NO dickheads in Hawker, Weetangera, Aranda? I beg to differ, having met a few of them. Every suburb has dickheads. If you live in bad parts of Kambah and Wanniassa, you’re more likely to run into them.

Where are the Tuggers equivalents? Fadden, MacArthur, Calwell, Bonython, Gordon, to name a few, are all reasonably devoid of d/heads.

30 secs after posting my comment I read of an axe-wielding mugger in Belconnen….

I know there are knobs everywhere, Tugger just seems to have more of them hence the use of ‘per-capita’ to clarify my claims.

They are not called “Thuggies” for nothing 🙂

Ironically, Tuggers has not had an axe wielding mugger yet……….

Got any stats to back up your claim? Thought not. You also forgot to mention the two areas in both of those suburbs you lived as both of them have areas that are less desirable than others. What precautions were you taking to prevent anything happening to your car?

I have lived down here for 17 years, 7 of those in Richardson & I love it. What has happend to the OP was unfortunate & probably a result of the weather warming up.

The fact is that each time something so blatantly unforgivable happens, and people here call for justice, we are told that we are a “lynch mob” or “the Laura Norder crowd” or that we do not understand the terrible upbringing/social situation/mental health problems etc etc ad nauseum of the perpetrators and that severe punishment/incarceration for these people is inappropriate, and that teh cops only fit people up and never catch the actual guilty parties.

Then we have the ACT judiciary, who seem to think their roles is that of social services to the criminal fraternity.

The whole world has gone mad. Except for me.

“Why would someone do something so horrible?”

Because people are scum.

As soon as I accepted this the world started making a lot more sense.

Also if you assume that anything that can be vandalised/stolen will be, and that if an opportunity exists for people to screw you over they will, then you end up making far more robust decisions that lead to those things happening less frequently.
