The Canberra Times has a story on Melbourne’s Pauline and John Gandel dropping $7 million on the National Gallery, its biggest single donation ever.

Half the wedge will go on building a great hall in the current massive redevelopment and the other half for new acquisitions (one supposes they’ll need something to go on the walls).

UPDATE: The National Gallery’s media release is now available.

Big deal. I know people who donate $10 for causes, where $10 represents a bigger personal sacrifice than $7 million does for some people. Good on the Gandel’s for donating the money. If they were genuinely interested however in the cause rather than the public adoration they could donate the money anonymously. Makes me nauseous that the wealthy have to grandstand themselves with these public displays of (self) gratuity.
