Catholics fight for the right to knock down their own church

The ABC brings word of extreme unhappiness in the Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn after their Braddon church of St Patricks was hit by a heritage listing which will stop it being knocked down and turned into lucrative apartments.

Archbishop Mark Coleridge says the move throws into doubt plans for a $36 million redevelopment of St Christopher’s Cathedral in Manuka.

He says the heritage listing could reduce returns on a land deal the Church is doing with the ACT Government on the Braddon property, and that would affect the cathedral expansion.

“If that decision stands it runs the risk of compromising the return, the return on that entire property, up to 30 per cent,” he said.

“If that is true then that is a serious blow to our plans at Manuka. We are concerned particularly with the centenary coming up to enhance the city, which God knows needs enhancement.”

When an Archbishop uses “God knows” it takes on a whole new meaning.

The church will be appealing the decision.

Personally, I’d be quite happy to participate in knocking down every church in the country. They are bad places, operating in the service of a very bad organisation.

Sounds like a second Kristallnacht.

It is interesting how religious intolerance is almost universally condemned….unless it is against Catholics and the Catholic Church, in which case it is not only considered acceptable, but is also treated as a joke.

Oh yeah, those Muslims bashers get a regular earful dont they… talk about victim mentality!

Troll-sniffer and I obviously have similar feelings about the catholic church.

That’ll knock your 30% return on the head. I could make 30% returns every week if it wasn’t for the tax man.

Sure you could, big man.

Someone needs to rein in this out of control heritage mob… I mean I’m not one to show sympathy to a corrupt organisation like the catholic church, but seriously, when you start declaring nondescript utilitarian brick buildings that have come to end of their natural lives as somehow significant enough to halt the evolution and rejuvenation of a city, it’s time to call enough is enough. If the heritage bleaters think it’s so fantastic, here’s a concept, buy it and move it somewhere where you can kiss and stroke it to your heart’s content, in the meantime the rest of us would rather have a dynamic city to live in.

Can’t they just get the boss to send down a bolt of lightning and render the heritage listing irrelevant? Or is the whole religion based on a con, and in fact they cannot expect divine help, even when it’s sorely needed to prop up a failing business model?

He’s a bit busy at the moment what with the Carbon Tax stuff and all.

Is He one of the 500 top polluters?

The Greens will probably think so – if they can get some bucks out of him…………that be HYMN shouldn’t it?!

As this is obviously a financial and business decision then it’s about time someone *cough religions cough* started paying TAX.

That’ll knock your 30% return on the head. I could make 30% returns every week if it wasn’t for the tax man.

God helps those who help themselves. Break out the petrol and matches.

…should have sold the ACT Government the hospital when you had the chance…

God knows the church needs to make as much financial returns as possible, because the Catholic Church is clearly short of cash…
