Hi Guys,

My cat was diagnosed with diabetes recently, and later this year I need to leave town for a few days, and was wondering what cattery options are available in Canberra where she can still have her insulin shots administered when I was away.

Thanks in advance.

Paul

I am really feeling bad for your cat. Diabetes have been very common in pets and special care need to be taken at that time. If you are moving out from the town then I would like to suggest you to keep your cat in observation of a good vet or leave her in a good animal clinic. Thanks for asking. Enjoy your trip.

Trying to revive this thread as I need to find somewhere near to Gungahlin for 3 cats. Has anyone recently used either the Dogotel at Hall or Best Friend Pet Centre in Macgregor?

One of the reception staff at Kippax, Yvette, runs her own cattery. I don’t have a cat, but I have only heard good things about her cattery. It may be worth asking her about it the next time you’re in there.

That’s excellent to know ColourClash. I will see if I can get hold of her on the phone and ask more about it. Hoping it’s not too far from home, as my cat doesn’t handle car travel well.

The Kippax Vet have been really helpful compared to her old vet, who was very keen on just going in and throwing more medical products at her rather than researching some other options for her. The Kippax consultation rates are really affordable too. And no I’m not associated with them at all.

Thanks so very much for the advice guys. It’s given me a lot of options to follow up on.

An update, I got a second opinion on puss today, and we might not need to go down the path of injections and may even be able to do a reversal on where we are, because it seems a treatment for an allergy may have contributed to her current situation. So a change in diet, stop of cortisol injections and a small amount of weight loss is what we are trialling for now, and hopefully this will be enough, otherwise we will go and try tablet form insulin instead.

Inner South Vet = the best. We have boarded everything from
Birds to bunnies to cats with them. The battery is part of the vet clinic and they play with them, care for them and give them medications if needed. They take the time to know your pet which is great- their customer service is fantastic.

If you are headed north on the way out of town, try the vet in Gundaroo. He runs boarding backed up by medical care. Good service. My two toms seem ok with it.

These guys got me out of a pickle a year or two back a few days before I was about to head overseas. My cat was already on a short course of medication but he got a sore eye which needed more thorough attention and Inner South kindly took him in at very short notice and during the busy xmas period too.

Prior to that he was lined up to be attended to by ACT Home Pet Care, where they come and visit your house, feed your pets and any other small jobs that may need doing, such as watering pot plants, emptying bins etc.

They say they’re happy to administer medication too, but not sure if that would extend to insulin shots.

Sadly my cat is no longer with us and although I haven’t used ACT Home Pet Care for a few years now I first used them over 10 years ago and have had no complaints.

I’ve heard great things about Tango’s Place at the RSPCA. And it’s the RSPCA – if you can’t trust them with animals, who are you going to trust? (Although I wouldn’t trust them with the enforcement of fair work principles).

I saw on my facebook feed the other day that the RSPCA at Weston now have a cattery. Surely the RSPCA would be able to deal with a cat with special needs?

The RSPCA has a cat boarding facility and on site vets http://www.rspca-act.org.au/what-we-do/locations-and-services/boarding-0

Personally I would steer clear of Tara at Pialigo. Our cat has epilepsy and suffered 5 medication free days recently. Half a tablet twice a day with food shouldn’t be that hard.

Despite an apology and promises of recompense, I never heard from them again and they wont be looking after anything of mine again.

Thanks for the tip re the cattery at Weston Creek Vet Hospital. I’ll be giving them a call next time.

Curtin Cat Care are excellent. I’m not sure if they would extend to this sort of thing, but they gave excellent care to my cat when she stayed there once and had a minor issue that they took care of. They really were amazing.

I would suggest trying your vet. If they don’t have facilities, Weston Creek Vet hospital have a cattery.

We have been taking our animals there for years and very happy with them.

I think with the need for those injections that can’t be forgotten, a vet is the only option.
